Hyde Park, Archibald Fountain

The Archibald Fountain is an art deco style fountain in Hyde Park, designed by French artist Francois Sicard and unveiled on 14 March 1932. The fountain is named after J.F. Archibald, owner and editor of The Bulletin, a newspaper which later became a magazine that encouraged writers to write about Australia. He bequeathed funds to build it to commemorate the association of Australia and France in World War I. The fountain features mythological characters of ancient Greece. The central pedestal features a bronze sculpture of Apollo with the fan-like shape of water formed by jets rising behind it, representing the rising sun.

Today marks the twenty year anniversary of the first photo I posted on this blog which was also a photo of this fountain and can be seen here. To celebrate, I returned this week for another look at the fountain; this time with St Mary's Cathedral as a backdrop. A view at the ten year anniversay can be seen here.

Eveleigh, Locomotive Workshop

The heritage listed Locomotive Workshop is part of the former Eveleigh Railway Yards, located along Locomotive Avenue in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. It was built in 1877 for trades required to repair or manufacture locomotives and their components. It has been redeveloped into commercial and retail space including this supermarket on the ground floor with a gym above.

Eveleigh, sculpture

These sculptures are located outside the International Business Centre in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. The building is the former Works Manager's Office of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops built in the 1880s. The life-size silhouettes and graphics tell the story of the building's historic role as the place where workers collected their pay and details about fortmightly wages in 1917 and bonuses good workers could receive.

Rockdale, house

 
'Hillside' is a historic house located on the corner of Villiers Street and Oswell Street, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. It was built around 1910 in the Federation Style and was the Favell family home but also the meeting spot for the Congregationalist Church. There have been plans to demolish the house and redevelop the property but the local council recently listed it for heritage protection so that may not happen.

General Post Office, Christmas

The western façade of the General Post Office (GPO) building, along George Street near the corner of Martin Place. It has been lit up with green and red festive lighting for Christmas, as well as red and white candy cane inspired stripes.

General Post Office, colonnade

The General Post Office (GPO) building is located at 1 Martin Place between George Street and Pitt Street. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1864 to 1891, designed by James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style. In 1999, the GPO building was redeveloped as part of a hotel and office building behind it. A smaller post office is still located in this corner beside boutiques, cafes and restaurants. A restaurant provides outdoor seating along the colonnade.

The heritage listed Locomotive Workshop is part of the former Eveleigh Railway Yards, located along Locomotive Avenue in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. It was built in 1877, consisting of 16 bays originally used for one or more trades required to repair or manufacture locomotives and their components. It is now being redeveloped into commercial and retail space. The substation in front of Bays 5 and 6 has been covered in artwork which lights up at night featuring an employment record of a former railway employee.

Sugar House, MLC Centre

 Pedestrians crossing the road at the intersection of King Street and Pitt Street. The heritage listed Sugar House stands on the corner with the MLC Centre skyscraper rising above.

Millers Point, Munn Reserve

Munn Reserve is located between Argyle Place and High Street, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. It sits on land which was part of a land grant to James Mann, who operated a shipbuilding yard with a floating dry dock in this area. It features sandstone blocks which are relics of demolished buildings.

St James Anglican Church, Queens Square

These summer flowers are in Queens Square, on the corner of St James Road and Macquarie Street. St James Anglican Church is a heritage listed church designed by convict architect Francis Greenway in the Old Colonial Regency style. It is the oldest church building in Sydney and has been in continuous use from its consecration in 1824.

Eveleigh, Engine Shop

The entrance to the former Locomotive Workshops, part of the former Eveleigh Railway Yards along Locomotive Street, in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. The signage piece features three large sculptural drums inspired by train driving wheels, consisting of weathered corten steel with a black welded wire mesh used as planters.The heritage listed Engine Shop was built in 1907 as a workshop to construct new locomotive engines. It now houses the National Innovation Centre, an entrepreneurial hub which provides laboratory space where start-up company dreams can become reality.
