Rookwood, power lines

These high voltage power lines and towers run through the middle of Rookwood Cemetery. Similar towers dominated the skyline through nearby Homebush Bay until about ten years ago. When it was transformed into Olympic Park for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the unsightly structures were replaced with underground cables. There hasn't been a need to the same with the rest of those lines which run through this cemetery. The brilliant sky above last weekend made them look slightly less unsightly. Also, some good clouds in the cemetery post below.

  9. I like the contrast...hard electrical power lines against wispy clouds driven by wind.

  10. I think the sky is so beautiful that the power lines almost look like modern art. Sometimes power lines bother me but at other times I see them almost as modern sculpture. That said, I think it's better to have them underground. This is a beautiful shot.

  12. They almost look like abstract art. As an engineer I can say that without irony or sarcasm.

  14. Ah, power lines...an equal portion of unsightly and lovely lies in all of them :o)They can add a wonderful touch to photos of the sky though, as shown here. I've featured power lines in a few of my photos too!

  30. Well done, your sky is just beautiful, the power lines give the best effect on it. What a perfect and magistic shot of it.

  31. The tower looks huge. I like the vaults in yesterdays post.

  32. Fantastic shot, Jim. We couldn't live with out it.

  33. Everything looks better with a bright blue sky behind it! Do any birds perch or nest on those towers? We often see vultures sitting on them here in the states.

  34. They are really becoming 'dinosaurs' all over with more and more cables running underground. Unsightly, but your picture makes them artistic.

  35. Sometimes - mostly depending of the sky above it - these powerlines and towers can be interesting objects. You've caught such a moment, I like it.

  36. Power lines...they are ugly and they remind us that our needs sometimes trump beauty--so we better think hard about what we need.

  37. I think the pylon looks very silvery and elegant in your shot.

  38. I still remember the constant humming of those cables...

  39. Neat sites. I am planning a blog post on the machines around here. You are good inspiration! I found the Cosmic Joker in Muskoka skies!

  40. Sometimes a bit of technology in the shot emphasizes the contrast between nature and us. What I've always wondered is why we've never managed to create really great-looking high-voltage lines--why haven't we ever turned our engineering design needs over to somebody like Hector Guimard? Wouldn't electrical conduits designed like the Paris Metro stations make them a little easier to live with (or be dead under)?

Oh, and the shot's pretty nifty, too.

  41. What a great way to deal with the lines...to make them the subject. Very artistic shot!

  42. Wonderful, towering shot for SWF. It's funny to think of those big power lines running through a peaceful cemetery. No complaints from the residents there!

  47. Wren, I can't say I've ever noticed any birds nest on these sorts of towers. I don't think they suit Australian bird species.

Owlfarmer, good point about the tower designs. Apart from burying the lines underground, there hasn't been any imagination in improving their designs.

  48. Nice shot, the tower and lines look great against that gorgeous sky.

  49. How thoughtful of the pylon people to know their structures would make a good cloud photo!

  50. Interesting what happens when a huge amount of money is thrown at an area. Would love to get the cables underground around here just need to attract the olympics!
