General Post Office

The western façade of the General Post Office (GPO) building, along George Street near the corner of Martin Place. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1866 to 1891 and was designed by colonial architect James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical architectural style.

  1. A grand and auspicious presence! What a contrast from the urban architecture of today.

  2. standing stall and proud amongst the post-modern buildings.

  3. A postoffice? I envy you, we don´t even have one these days :(

    1. It's use has certainly changed in recent years so that most of the building now houses shops and restaurants. The good news though is it still contains a post office in this part of the building, even if it is smaller than it had been.

  4. One of the first buildings I noticed when we went for our first walk in Sydney!! Gorgeous.
