Sutherland, Woronora Cemetery

Woronora Cemetery and Crematorium is located in the southern suburb of Sutherland. Woronora became a general cemetery in 1895 on land that was formerly a brickworks. This stainless steel sculpture on a granite plinth is a simple armillary sphere. It stands on the side of the road, near a bus stop, in the middle of the cemetery.

  1. I had to read and look a couple of times here Jim, because the sculpture (while interesting) doesn't seem to go with an 1895 cemetery. But updating the sculptures probably means they're keeping the cemetery in good condition and that's great!

  2. Sallie, I agree with you there. This sculpture does seem a little out of place in this part of the cemetery.

  3. Perhaps the style of the sculpture explains its being at odds with the cemetery! One world? More odd is where the sculpture is placed - seemingly like a sign post outside the cemetery. A great post generating some interesting thoughts!

  4. Gemma, I'm scratching my head about the symbolism too. A globe with an arrow through it and the animal on top looks like a merhorse: half horse, half dolphin.

  5. Good shot, Jim!

The structure in the foreground is an armillary sphere. See Wikipedia article here:

I guess it's about life, death, the universe and everything ;-)

  6. Nick, thanks for that link. The good thing about blogging is that there are always people visiting who can explain things for me, when I've exhausted all my research options. I'll add something to my post. Cheers.

  7. Thank you for another excellent article. This place is where anyone could get that kind of information in such a perfect method of writing. I have a presentation subsequent week, and I'm on the look out for such information.

  10. If it's out of place, it makes for an interesting discussion! Have a great week:)

  12. That is where my mum and dad are buried. They loved Loftus and Sydney, their new homeland after England. They lived there all their life after migrating. Dad died first and mum stayed on for another 7 years but then in ill health she came to Brisbane so I could keep an eye on her. She never liked it here. When she died I sent her ashes to Woronora cemetery to be near Dad and in her favourite city. It probably sounds silly as she wouldn't know, but it made me feel better.

  15. this is one of the major cemeteries that I have never visited. I must work out how to get out that way. And take a packed lunch! I liked Diane's story.

  16. Nice to see interesting sculptures in the cemetery. We dont have much cemetery left in our small tiny country. Most are being cremated instead of buried due to lack of space.

  17. Learned a couple of new words here today! And I like Diane's story, too.

  18. Great to see this view of the cemetery, most unusual. I am starting to see more sculpture and carvings (other than on memorials) in UK cemeteries too.

  19. Last time I was down there was for a cremation. I remember a rose garden. Its on my long list of places to visit.

Julie, Woronora is one of the more easily accessible cemeteries. Train to Sutherland and walk from there. There's probably a bus from the station as well.

  22. Sondra and C&T, when you have these really large cemeteries, it's not unusual to have a few bus stops there.
