Botanic Gardens, sundial (Theme Day: Shadows)

The sundial in the Royal Botanic Garden which sits in the middle of the Herb Garden is an armillary sphere sundial made of silicon bronze that weighs 1500kg and is 2.4m tall with a 1.5m internal ring diameter. It was designed specifically for the Herb Garden in 1994 by John Ward and Margaret Folkard and features herbs modelled in clay in high relief by Adelaide sculptor Karen Rumpf from drawings by Gardens’ illustrator Marion Westmacott. The sun shines on the central bar, which then casts a shadow onto the time marked, angled ring, indicating that this photo was taken at around about 1.40pm. The view from the other angle can be seen here.

  4. The usefulness of the shadow. Without it perhaps no-one would ever have made their way to Australia after Aborigines!

  5. Nice shots Jim. I must have a wander through the gardens again just to check out all the nooks and crannies.

  6. Good shots. I was thinking, like Julie, that must get down to that part of the Gardens again. I normally frequent the parts near the Art Gallery and Domain.

  7. Thats a great sundial much better that the normal ones ive seen. The shadow and the sunbathers make today in Christchurch look wintery.
Not much chance of a shadow pic here.

  8. That's nice and a tad tricky in that you show us two opposite views. Are the fruit bats still resident in the historical trees in the gardens? They were there last Oct-Nov.

  9. Yes, Julia. I saw plenty of fruit bats resting in those trees you can see in the distance, when I took these photos a few days ago.

  16. I'd love to visit these gardens! When I was in Sydney, I had to run around and have tea with my traveling companion's family. Ugh! I would have rather visited the lovely gardens.
