Botanic Gardens, Spring

'Spring' is a Victorian era sculpture located in the Royal Botanic Gardens. It is one of the 'Four Seasons' statues that adorn the Palace Gardens Steps. They came from Italy in 1883 from the studio of Charles Francis Summers, an Australian-born sculptor living in Rome. The statues had been located here originally but were then separated and distributed around the gardens, where some lost vital body parts and adornments. They were restored by Australian sculptor Jacek Luszczyk who recreated missing parts. The restored statues were unveiled in their original location in 2010. 'Spring' and 'Summer' are at the top of the steps, with 'Autumn' and 'Winter' at the bottom.

Spring Flowers at David Jones department store

Spring has arrived in Sydney and many shopping centres, department stores and boutiques are celebrating with a burst of Spring flowers. David Jones department store in the city maintains a tradition of filling its store with magnificent flower displays and this year they have embraced an Australian native flowers theme.

Cook and Phillip Park, Spring Cycle

This colourful display was located in the square at Cook and Phillip Park, as part of the annual Living Colour Festival. This year's theme was "Spring Cycle, featuring bicycles, white picket fence and floral displays in a number of squares and streets around the city. The Australian Museum can be seen in the distance.

Darlington, drinking fountain and horse trough

The James Spring Drinking Fountain and Horse Trough is located along City Road, in the inner city suburb of Darlington. It was designed by Morrow & De Putron Architects with Art Nouveau detailing. the inscription reads: "This fountain presented to the Municipality of Darlington by James Spring Esquire. 15 years Mayor. January 1910. Morrow & De Putron architects". Set immediately next to the gutter this is its original site, outside the University of Sydney. It is in continuous danger from passing traffic so a protection barrier has been installed.

Queen Victoria Building, Spring To Life

"Spring To Life" was an art installation that was recently hung below the central dome at the Queen Victoria Building during the Art and About Sydney festival. This large paper artwork was created by paper engineer, Benja Harney.

Queen Victoria Building, flowers and lights

This display of spring flowers and lights hangs in the central atrium of the Queen Victoria Building. This view is looking down two levels to the decorative tile floor on the ground floor.

Botany Bay, rainbow

We've had a had a lot of grey skies and spring showers over the last week. On Friday afternoon, I noticed this amazing rainbow in the sky and followed it to Botany Bay. By the time I was out of my car, the storm clouds started gathering again and the rainbow had lost some of its brilliance but I managed a couple of snaps before it disappeared.

Sutherland, Woronora Cemetery, statue

The "Resurrection of Jesus" is a statue which stands in the Catholic section of the Woronora General Cemetery, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. This 3 metre tall statue which weighs 3.5 tonnes was installed in 2012 as part of a "Stations of the Cross" monument. It has been placed in water, symbolic of Christ's life giving message: "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Woolloomooloo, Finger Wharf

 
These hot pink spring flowers add some colour to the boardwalk near the Finger Wharf, in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo.

Botanic Gardens, The Calyx

These palm trees are located in the centre of the outdoor exhibition space of The Calyx in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Many colourful spring flowers are currently on display indoors and outdoors.

Leichhardt, school

Leichhardt Public School is located on the corner of Norton Street and Marion Street, in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt. The Infants building was designed by William Kemp in the Victorian Italianate architectural style and built in 1891. A proliferation of signs outside the school at the moment, inludes a banner advertising the school's Spring Fete held last week and an election poster for The Greens on the lamp post for the federal election.

Randwick, St Jude's Fountain

St Jude's Fountain is located on the corner of Alison Road and Church Street, in the eastern suburb of Randwick. It was sculpted by Walter McGill and opened on 9 November 1866 as the first public water supply to this area. This sandstone fountain was originally fed by an underground spring and in 2000 had some conservation work done on it.

Customs Square, Living Colour

'Living Colour' creates vibrant floral displays around the city and inner city suburbs every year in Spring. These flowers and plants are located at Customs Square, in front of Customs House near Circular Quay. The planter boxes feature snapdragons, celosia and curly parsley, blue and burgundy petunias, euphorbia, ageratum and bromeliads.

Botanic Gardens, Lotus Pond

The Lotus Pond in the Royal Botanic Gardens has no plants visible above the water in the middle of winter. The fountain in the centre is known as the Bird Bath Fountain, first installed before 1879 but replaced in 1987, due to damage. The pond looks very different in spring.

Botanic Gardens, Main Pond, flowers

The spring flowers are in full bloom in the flower beds near the Main Pond in the Royal Botanic Gardens. The flowers grow in interesting formations which I'm sure would look brilliant from high above. The old flower bed arrangement can be seen here.

Glebe, horse trough

This planter box is located along St Johns Road, in the inner city suburb of Glebe. This heritage listed item was originally a horse trough and serves as a tangible reminder of when horses were a common means of transport. This concrete trough is not as fancy as the sandstone James Spring Drinking Fountain and Horse Trough in nearby Darlington.

Alexandria, Alan Davidson Oval

With summer coming to an end and autumn just begun, this Cricket match played on Alan Davidson Oval last weekend will be one of the last of the season. The oval, named after a famous Australian cricketer Alan Davidson, is located on the edge of Sydney Park in the inner city suburb of Alexandria. It is used for cricket in the spring and summer is also used for Australian Rules Football in autumn and winter.

Botanic Gardens, Lotus Pond

The Lotus Pond is linked to the Main Pond in the Royal Botanic Gardens. The pond is almost completely covered in lotus or water lilies in spring, which will now bloom over summer. The fountain in the middle and the lamp to the right side are almost lost amongst the plants. The pond looks very different in autumn and winter.
