Woolloomooloo, mall

This view of the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo is from Cowper Wharf Road, close to the Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf. Forbes Street has been blocked to traffic and converted into a mall. An old warheouse on the left is now the Artspace Visual Arts Centre. A recent development of flats, restaurants and shops with a clock tower has been built on the right, in a style to match the historic buildings in this area. The tall building in the distance is Horizon Apartments at Darlinghurst.

  1. this must have been taken very early - before the crowds of pedestrian descended?

  2. I certainly remember the name Woolloomooloo from my trip to Australia with my young brother in 1982. It has more vowels than the word Mississippi has consonants.
Very interesting picture, and very nice that the building on the right was constructed in keeping with the character of the area. Thanks!

  3. Marvelous capture as always, Jim, and as always, gorgeous skies!! Love the tall apartment building, too!
So many of the Australian names for cities, etc. I find delightful because they are so different from anything I'm accustomed to, even though I have traveled a great deal outside the US. So, I find myself smiling or an occasional giggle such as today with Woolloomooloo!! Have a great weekend!

  4. You have such patience to get unpopulated shots. I like the sympathetic new development keeping the character of the area.

  6. VioletSky, I usually pick the days which aren't busy and wait around until there aren't too many people around for the perfect shot.

RobG, yes it does take a bit of patience to get the shots I want.

  7. What a beautiful day! Because there are no people, I recall time lapse photography from back in the days of film. I wonder if one can take time lapse images with digital. With a little ingenuity, probably so. Thanks for sharing. Hope you have a fabulous weekend.

  10. Woolloomooloo ... funny name ...
But I think they have done good work with the building on the right, I can't see it's new.
And I see some clouds, mostly your skies are absolutely clear ...

  11. Lovely and peaceful. The tall white building seems to be out of synch with the mall though...

  12. ladyfi, I agree. Some of these tall new apartment blocks are often criticised for not blending in with their surroundings.
