Walsh Bay, Vivid Festival, Nymphaea Nelumbo

"Nymphaea Nelumbo" is an artwork floating in Walsh Bay between the wharves in the inner city suburb of Dawes Point. It was created by Thomas Cole, Felicia Huang and Rosenell Serrano for the Vivid Sydney Festival, running from 24 May to 10 June 2013. The Lotus Plant sculptures have been created from recycled road and maritime signage around Sydney Harbour. The plants are fitted with solar panels and LED lighting.

Botanic Gardens, Lotus Pond

The Lotus Pond is located in the Royal Botanic Gardens and is linked to the Main Pond. The lotus or water lilies that surround the fountain in the middle of the pond are brown and dying off at this time of year. To view the lilies green and thriving in summer see here. Botanic Gardens, The Boxers

This is one of a pair of marble statues known as "The Boxers", located in the Royal Botanic GardensThis two-metre high sculpture is a copy of "The Greek Boxer Damoxenos" by Antonio Canova which was completed in 1800 and is now in the collection at the Vatican MuseumThe copy of "The Greek Boxer Kreugas" by Antonio Canova can be seen here. The two engaged in a boxing match at the Nemea Games, where Damoxenos killed Kreugas. The referee disqualified Damoxenos and declared the dead Kreugas the winner. These statues were made in Italy and installed in the Botanic Gardens in the 1880s.

Botanic Gardens, A Folly for Mrs Macquarie

This folly is located in the Royal Botanic Gardens with the city skyline as a backdrop. "A Folly for Mrs Macquarie" was created by Fiona Hall and installed in 2000 at the possible site of an original folly. The Royal Botanic Gardens were developed from 1816 under the direction of Elizabeth Macquarie, the second wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Darling Harbour, HMAS Advance

The HMAS Advance is a navy patrol boat on permanent display at the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour. It was commissioned in 1968 and served out of Darwin, Northern Territory until 1980. The larger ship behind it is the HMAS Vampire, a navy destroyer, The office buildings of the city rise up behind them.

Mosman, Taronga Zoo

The upper entrance to Taronga Zoo, in the north shore suburb of Mosman. Sydney's original zoo was established in 1800 on seven acres of land at Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Zoo had outgrown its site and plans were made to exchange the land to Aston Park at Mosman. Taronga Zoo was officially opened on 7 October, 1916. Taronga is an Aboriginal word meaning beautiful view.

Balgowlah Heights, Forty Baskets Beach, baths

The view from the baths at Forty Baskets Beach, in the northern suburb of Balgowlah Heights. The beach is named after a catch of 40 baskets of fish sent to a contingent of New South Wales troops detained at the nearby North Head Quarantine Station after returning from Sudan in 1885. The boats are moored in North Harbour, one of the three harbours that make up Port Jackson. In the distance is a ferry at Manly Ferry wharf, on Manly Cove.

The former Glebe post office is located on the corner of Glebe Point Road and St Johns Road, in the inner west suburb of Glebe. It was designed by James Barnet and built around 1890 in the Victorian Free Classical architectural style.

Balgowlah, The Norwegian Seamen's Church (Theme Day: Norwegian Constitution Day)

The The Norwegian Seamen's Church is located along White Street in the northern suburb of Balgowlah. Sjømannskirken - the Norwegian Church Abroad - was founded in 1864 and established to secure the moral and religious education of Scandinavian seafarers. This historic building known as "Whitehall", was built in the 1870s in the Victorian Rustic Gothic style and thought to be the oldest surviving house in Balgowlah. It was once the home of Australia's first prime minister Edmund Barton and was a private residence until it became a church in 2004.

Botany, Sir Joseph Banks Park, sculpture

The Sir Joseph Banks Park is located in the eastern suburb of Botany. The Sir Joseph Banks Zoological and Botanical Gardens were the main attraction of the nearby Sir Joseph Banks Hotel in the 19th Century. The colony's first zoo featured animals such as kangaroos, elephants, tigers, bears camels and gorillas. These animals are commemorated by sculptured life-sized, life-like zoo animals such as this elephant in the children's playground, created in 1988.

Botany, Sir Joseph Banks Park, sculpture

The Sir Joseph Banks Park is located in the eastern suburb of Botany. Originally, the Sir Joseph Banks Pleasure Gardens, they were the main attraction of the old Sir Joseph Banks Hotel in the 19th Century. In the 1840s and 1850s the Sir Joseph Banks Zoological and Botanical Gardens at this site featured the colony's first zoo with such animals such as kangaroos, elephants, tigers, bears camels and gorillas. It is commemorated by sculptured life-sized, life-like zoo animals such as this gorilla in the children's playground, created in 1988.

Botany, Sir Joseph Banks Park, mosaic

This terrace is located in Sir Joseph Banks Park, in the eastern suburb of Botany. The mosaic titled "Sir Joseph Banks' First Journey", depicts the journey of Joseph Banks, a naturalist on the expedition of the Endeavour led by James Cook that explored the eastern coast of Australia in 1770 and landed at nearby Botany Bay.

This water lily pond is located in the Royal Botanic Gardens. While this man-made pond may not be that spectacular, the Nymphae White Star flowers it contains at this time of year are quite beautiful.

Strand Arcade, yarn bombing

This artwork has been installed in the Strand Arcade to celebrate Wool Week. Textile artist Magda Sayeg has created an installation of two six-metre-tall fibreglass gumtrees and a lamp post wrapped in over 600 metres of colourful Australian Merino wool. This type of graffiti art which involves covering trees, lamp posts or other objects in knitting is known as "yarn bombing".

Hyde Park, John Baptist Fountain

The John Baptist Fountain stands in Hyde Park North, near the corner of Park Street and Elizabeth Street. John Baptist established the Baptist Gardens in Redfern, the first pleasure gardens which attracted visitors in the days before public parks. This fountain was originally installed there in the 1860s and was donated to the trustees of Hyde Park in 1888. It was moved during construction of the underground railway in 1920 and restored as a working fountain in this location in 2012.

Hyde Park, monument

This monument consisting of a 104-millimetre gun standing on a sandstone plinth is located at the south-eastern entrance of Hyde Park. It comes from the SMS Emden, a German light cruiser warship in World War I. It was a raider in the Indian Ocean and after engaging the HMAS Sydney at the Battle of Cocos Island it was run aground to prevent her from sinking. The monument stands near the corner of Liverpool Street and College Street and points towards the start of Oxford Street.

Darlinghurst, murals

These artworks are part of "We Are Here", a 15-metre-high, 75-metre-long mural lining the walls of buildings along Foley Street, a laneway in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. This giant artwork which was created by Australian street artists, illustrators and photographers, depicts some of the city’s most significant people and events using paint, collage, drawing, paste-ups, stencils and photography.

Strathfield, council chambers

The Strathfield Council Chambers building is located along Homebush Road in the inner west suburb of Strathfield. It was designed by John Sulman and built in 1887 but has undergone many additions including first floor additions in 1922 and town hall in 1923, designed by Harry Chambers Kent. A war memorial to World War 1 of a globe of the world erected on a granite pillar sits at the front and casts a shadow on the wall in the mornings.

Frenchmans Bay is a small bay that opens up to the larger Botany Bay, in the eastern suburb of La Perouse. The Boatshed restaurant, off Anzac Parade, sits right on the beach. This view is from a lookout in Botany Bay National Park.

La Perouse, museum

The La Perouse Museum is located in the Botany Bay National Park, in the eastern suburb of La Perouse. The museum opened in 1988 and tells the story of the expedition led by Jean-François de Galaup La Pérouse, its arrival in Botany Bay in 1788, the encounter with the First Fleet and eventual shipwreck in the Solomon Islands. It contains maps, scientific instruments and relics recovered from French explorers. This heritage listed building was designed by Colonial Architect James Barnett and built in 1882 as a Cable Station, It housed the operation of the first submarine telegraph communications cable laid between Australia and New Zealand and provided accommodation for staff.

Alexandria, The Grounds (Theme Day: Creative Artisan)

 "The Grounds of Alexandria" is an artisan bakery, an in-house coffee roastery and café, located on the corner of Bourke Road and Huntley Street, in the inner city suburb of Alexandria. It is located in a former pie factory from the early 1900s in the Alexandria Creative Park, which also contains the redeveloped factory, chimney and silo of a former linseed oil factory. This site also features a garden of organic herloom vegetables and fragrant herbs which supplies the kitchen. The truck loaded with hay bails acts creates a unique sign, with the logo painted on the side.
