Pyrmont, Union Square


Looking across Union Square, on the corner of Harris Street and Miller Street, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont. This is an old photo from 2015 because the former Commonwealth Bank branch here has since closed. The Pyrmont and Ultimo Great War Memorial was unveiled in 1922. It is a four-sided monument made of trachyte on a base of sandstone and is topped with a bronze statue of a female figure representing 'peace'.

Ultimo, The Goods Line Walk, Vivid Sydney


"Kinetic Perspective" is an art installation which was located along The Goods Line Walk in the inner city suburb of Ultimo for the Vivid Sydney Festival. The 32 illuminated spinning circles which move in sync with one other, were created by Spanish architect and lighting designer Juan Fuentes.

Ultimo, University of Technology Sydney, Green Genie

 
The Green Genie is located outside the University of Technology Sydney, along Jones Street in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It is part of UTS Algal Phenomics Facility which can rapidly screen, test, evolve and characterise algae to optimise their potential for developing new products, accelerate production and innovate sustainable biology. The Green Genie fits into a standard six-metre shipping container for direct air carbon capture, wastewater treatment and algae biomass production that at full capacity is expected to capture up to seven tonnes of carbon a year; and provides a scale-solution to create algae-based products including plastics, food and feed.

Ultimo, University of Technology Sydney, UTS Central

 UTS Central is on the campus of the University of Technology Sydney, on the corner of Broadway and Jones Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. Also known as UTS Building 2, the 17 floors of UTS Central contain the new Blake Library and scholarly Reading Room, student study spaces and a food court that opens onto Alumni Green. It also houses the Faculty of Engineering and IT and the Faculty of Law with trial courts and Moot Court. The building was completed in 2019 with the tower designed by Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (FJMT) and the podium designed by Lacoste+Stevenson in association with DJRD. This view is from Alumni Green.

Ultimo, University of Technology Sydney, UTS Tower

 
UTS Tower is on the campus of the University of Technology Sydney, along Broadway in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. Also known as UTS Building 1, the 27 floors contain many of the administrative units of the university. It was completed in 1979 in the brutalist architectural style from a 1968 plan by Michael Dysart of the NSW Government Architect's Office. This view is from the back entrance which leads to Alumni Green.

Ultimo, University of Technology Sydney, Alumini Green, sign

 
This sign is located at the entrance to the Alumni Green at the University of Technology Sydney, off Jones Street in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. The Vicki Sara Building stands along one side and UTS Central with the Blake Library is on the other. The portal provides natural light to an underground library storage facility. The Library Retrieval System (LRS) is for lesser-used items from university's physical collection. The books and other items are stored in special bins and retrieved by fast-travelling robotic cranes, which can deliver requests to the library's service desk.

Ultimo, University of Technology Sydney, Vicki Sara Building

 
The Vicki Sara Building is on the campus of University of Technology Sydney, located along Thomas Street in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It was designed by Durbach Block Jaggers in association with BVN Architecture and built in 2015. It was originally called the Faculty of Science and Graduate School of Health Building, but was renamed in recognition of long-serving UTS Chancellor and endocrinologist Vicki Sara. The UTS Tower and UTC Central can be seen behind it.

Ultimo, Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, Vivid Sydney



The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building is a Business School building on the campus of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), between Ultimo Road and The Goods Line, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo.The 12-storey tower was designed by Canadian American architect Frank Gehry and built in 2014. "Frankly, My Dear..." was a light show designed by Sincair Park for the annual Vivid Sydney Festival, which ran from 27 May to 18 June 2022. The dynamic light show illuminates thr windows with colour-changing cove lights and wall grazers which respond to the level of activity in the area, transitioning from frenetic pulsing of saturated colour during busy periods to more subdued and relaxed feelings as the evening winds down.

 This information board is located outside the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, a Business School building on the campus of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), along The Goods Line in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. The inspiring message on the side is "THINK.CHANGE.DO". There are some interesting pieces of street furniture along The Goods Line too.

Ultimo, Powerhouse Museum, Vivid Sydney

These former tram sheds are located at the end of MacArthur Street, between Omnibus Lane and The Goods Line, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. The tram sheds were converted to offices in 1981 as part of the Powerhouse Museum (Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences) development. "We Dream The City" is a light projection for the annual Vivid Sydney Festival, which ran from 27 May to 18 June 2022, which featured visions of Sydney city streets through time. It was created by Michael Killalea and Sarah Barns in collaboration with Nigel Cruickshank, Gary Sinclair, Historical Archive and Digitisation Team Transport for NSW and the Sound Archive of Australia.

Good Line tunnel, Vivid Sydney, Convergence

"Convergence" is an art installation created for the Vivid Sydney festival, in the disused Goods Line tunnel that once linked the port facilities at Darling Harbour with Central railway station. It became a portal to a spectacular convergence of lights, lasers and smoke effects.

Broadway, Grace Brothers department store, clock tower

This clock tower and globe lamp are part of the former Grace Brothers department store along Broadway, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It was built in the Federation Queen Anne architectural style as part of the flagship building of the department store and matching the original building across the road, completed in 1904. Grace Bros vacated the Broadway store in 1992 and these buildings were restored and redeveloped in 1998. This building became student accommodation for the nearby University of Sydney. Broadway is the name of the road that runs from Railway Square to the University of Sydney and is the border between the suburbs of Ultimo and Chippendale, Glebe and Camperdown.

Ultimo, Powerhouse Museum

The Powerhouse Museum is located along Harris Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. The museum is mostly in the former Ultimo power station built in 1899 to power Sydney's electric tram system which closed in 1961 but this extension was added when the museum opened in 1988. It is part of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences and houses a collection of exhibits covering history, science, technology, design, industry, decorative arts, music, transport and space exploration.

Ultimo, Powerhouse Museum

Ultimo, mural


This mural is on the side of a house on the corner of Omnibus Lane and MacArthur Street, off Harris Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. This artwork is a collaboration between street artists Rone and Numskull for the “WonderWalls” exhibition in 2012.

Ultimo, mural (Theme Day: Sensual)

This sensual mural is on the side of a shop on the corner of Harris Street and MacArthur Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. Hannah's Pies is a takeaway pie shop attached to Hannah's Bakehouse, established in 1888, which is the sole supplier to the Harry's Cafe de Wheels chain of pie shops. On display on Hannah's sensual tray is a Tiger Pie (a beef pie with mash potato, mushy peas and gravy), a Pie with tomato sauce and a Hot Dog (with tomato sauce and mustard).

Ultimo, The Goods Line, sculpture

This contemporary sculpture is located along an urban walkway known as "The Goods Line", in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It is in front of one of the buildings of the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). The Goods Line was built along a disused rail corridor from Central railway station from Railway Square to Darling Harbour and also features a linear park and open space.

Ultimo, Broadway

This commercial building is located along Broadway, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. The three storey building with Venetian style windows, was built in the Victorian Italianate architectural style. It originally housed a dentist, chemist and the offices of a chemist co-operative company.

Ultimo, payphone

This payphone is located along Mary Ann Street in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It stands on the edge of Mary Ann Park opposite the Sydney Technical College building, which is part of the Sydney Institute of TAFE (Technical and Further Education). This payphone has a pink cap on top with a white Wi-Fi symbol and promotional signs on the glass.

Ultimo, Uniting Church

Ultimo Uniting Church is located on the corner Quarry Street and Bulwara Road, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It was originally a Presbyterian Church built in 1883 in the Victorian Gothic architectural style. In 1977, the Presbyterians combined with the Methodist and Congregational churches to form the Uniting Church in Australia. A non-denominational group begun in 1996 which became The MustardSeed later moved into the church, becoming a Uniting Church faith community in 1998. The heritage listed building was restored in 2004.
