General Post Office, colonnade


The General Post Office (GPO) building is located at 1 Martin Place between George Street and Pitt Street. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1864 to 1891, designed by James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style. In 1999, the GPO building was redeveloped as part of a hotel and office building behind it. A smaller post office is still located in this corner beside boutiques, cafes and restaurants. A restaurant provides outdoor seating along the colonnade.

Annandale, post office

 
This post office is located on the corner of Booth Street and Johnston Street, in the inner west suburb of Annandale. This heritage listed building was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon and built in 1895 in the Federation Free Classical style.

Leichhardt, post office

This former post office is located on the corner of Norton Street and St Johns Road, in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt. This heritage listed building was designed by James Barnet and built in 1888 in the Victorian Academic Classical and Victorian Italianate styles. It was sold in 1992 and the main part of the building now houses a private legal office, while the post office only occupies the small side annexe.

Homebush, post office

This former post office is located along The Crescent, in the western suburb of Homebush. The building was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon and built in 1895. It now houses a Medical and Dental Centre.

Bondi, post office

This post office is located on the corner of Bondi Road and Ocean Street, in the eastern suburb of Bondi. The heritage listed building was built in 1915 in the Federation style with Arts and Crafts and Queen Anne influences. The butcher shop next door features a hand painted sign on the side wall advertising some interesting cuts of game meat from Venison, Buffalo and Wild Boar to the native Kangaroo, Emu and Crocodile.

Five Dock, art

This artwork on a large rock is located in Fred Kelly Place, in the inner west suburb of Five Dock. "Piazza Eolie" is a mosaic mural created by Noula Diamantopoulos in 2013 as an homage to the local Italian community, inspired by the history and stories of the Aeolians. As an entry-marker into the piazza it features a fishing boat adorned with mosaic elements on one side and on this side an image of Eolie, the God of Wind. In the distance is the post office.

Redfern, post office, mural

This artwork is located at the Australia Post state headquarters along Cleveland Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. "Feed the Whale, Feed the Dream" is a mural created by Adam Hill (aka Blak Douglas) in 2017. The project was initiated in Reconciliation Week in 2016, when Australia Post staff were asked to design artwork based on the theme: Our History, Our Story, Our Future. The final work uses elements of the top three submissions from Gina Georgiannis, Leanne Bryce and Vicki Waddy.

Drummoyne, post office

Drummoyne Post Office is located along Victoria Road, in the inner west suburb of Drummoyne. It was built 1906 in the Federation Arts and Crafts architectural style but had modifications made in 1938 in the art deco architectural style.

The clock tower of the General Post Office (GPO) building, located at 1 Martin Place between George Street and Pitt Street. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1864 to 1891, designed by James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style. In 1999, the GPO building was redeveloped as part of the Westin Hotel and Macquarie Bank office building behind it.

The General Post Office (GPO) building is located at 1 Martin Place between George Street and Pitt Street. This year, the GPO facade and clock tower featured Christmas Projections a light projection show which ran from 26th November until 25th December 2015. They featured various Christmas and Sydney themes.

This large Christmas Tree is located in the Martin Place pedestrian mall, rising up towards the clock tower of the General Post Office. This interactive Christmas Tree allows people to text or tweet a message which lights up the banners in the tree's branches for everyone to see.

Martin Place, Commonwealth Trading Bank Building and General Post Office

The Commonwealth Trading Bank Building and the General Post Office are located along Martin Place. The Commonwealth Trading Bank Building, also known as the Commonwealth Bank Building, is on the corner of Pitt Street and Martin Place. It was designed by John Kirkpatrick, combining Grecian Doric and Art Deco architectural styles and built in 1916. The building was expanded with extensions designed by E.H. Henderson and F. Hill between 1929 and 1933 and an annex was constructed in 1967. In 2015, this 1960s extension was rebuilt and much of the 1916 building with 1930s extension was stripped out and refurbished. Camperdown, University of Sydney, Bank Building

The Bank Building is located along Science Road on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. This heritage listed building was originally designed by John Frederick Hilly and built in 1854. Its design was altered by Professor Leslie Wilkinson in 1923-1924 when it incorporated the facade of the former Commercial Banking Company's branch, located on the corner of George Street and Barrack Street in the city. Built in the Victorian Italianate architectural style, it was donated to the university. It now houses a post office and is part of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

General Post Office, sculptures

An abstract view above the main entrance of the General Post Office (GPO) building at Martin Place, between George Street and Pitt Street. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1866 to 1891 and was designed by colonial architect James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style. The white marble statue of Queen Victoria is flanked by allegorical figures. This building was built before Australia's federation, when we became an independent nation, so below them is the United Kingdom coat of arms sculpted in sandstone.

Martin Place, The Cenotaph

The Cenotaph is a war memorial located in Martin Place, in front of the General Post Office (GPO), between George Street and Pitt Street. The word 'cenotaph' means empty tomb, a sepulchral monument in honour of a person whose body is elsewhere. It was unveiled on Anzac Day, 25th April 1929. The model for the soldier facing east was Private William Piggot Darby. The model for the sailor facing west was Leading Seaman John William Varco. The inscription on the south side reads "To Our Glorious Dead" and on the north side reads "Lest We Forget" which is a line from "Recessional", a Rudyard Kipling poem.
