Brighton-Le-Sands, beach

 

A view of Brighton-Le-Sands baths and across Botany Bay to the  cranes at Port Botany. It wasn't a great day for a swim at the beach but a young boy was amused by all the seagulls flying and walking around.

Sandringham, navigation mark

A navigation mark is located near a sea wall in Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Sandringham. Two cormorants sit on the posts of Sandringham Baths, a tidal pool also known as Vanston Baths. In the distance you can see the beach at Dolls Point and the port facilities at Port Botany.

Brighton-Le-Sands, Botany Bay

This White-faced Heron forages for food along the fence between Cook Park and Lady Robinsons Beach, in the southern suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands. The view across Botany Bay is clear to Port Botany.

Kyeemagh, rock groyne

This sea wall or rock groyne is located at the mouth of the Cooks River into Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Kyeemagh. It is one of many sea walls along Lady Robinson Beach which have been built to protect the sandy foreshore. The container terminals and vessel berths of Port Botany seaport can be seen in the distance.

Kurnell, sculpture

  Looking across Botany Bay to Port Botany and La Perouse from the southern suburb of Kurnell.  This large bronze sculpture on the shore is 'The Eyes of the Land and the Sea', designed by Alison Page and Nik Lachacjzak. It is one of the three sculptures installed in 2020 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the encounter between Aboriginal Australians and the crew of the HMB Endeavour, commanded by James Cook. It is described as an ‘abstraction of the ribs of the HMB Endeavour and the bones of the Gweagal totem the whale’.

La Perouse, Frenchmans Bay

Watsons Bay, wharf

The Pilot Station Wharf in the eastern suburb of Watsons Bay. The Watsons Bay Pilot Station operated under the authority of the Harbour Master and was responsible for providing pilot services to ocean going vessels coming into Sydney Harbour. Since pilot operations moved to Port Botany in 2008, it is now used by the converted Boating Safety Education Centre.

Jones Bay Wharf

A view of the end of Pier 21 at Jones Bay Wharf, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont, with North Sydney and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the distance. Jones Bay Wharf consists of Piers 19-21 of Pyrmont Wharves. The wharf and warehouse buildings were originally built in 1919, as part of Sydney's port facilities. After those port facilities were relocated to Port Botany, the buildings were redeveloped in 2003 into commercial space, which includes restaurants and cafes.

Garden Island, dockyard

Garden Island is the home port for the naval fleet based on the east coast of Australia, located in the eastern suburb of Potts Point. It is a major marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia. The island has supported naval activities since 1788 and was originally used as a garden bed to grow food for ship crews. Land was reclaimed between Potts Point and Garden Island to expand the site for engineering facilities. This view is from Mrs Macquarie's Point, across Woolloomooloo Bay.

Cockatoo Island, Sutherland Dock, crane

This crane is on Cockatoo Island which has a long history of ship repair and shipbuilding activities. Sutherland Dock was built with free labour between 1882 and 1890. Nearby Fitzroy Dock was built using convict labour between 1847 and 1857. The shipyard closed in 1992 and the island is now being revitalised as a public attraction on Sydney Harbour.

Barangaroo Reserve, Harbour Control Tower

The beginning of the end of the Sydney Ports Harbour Control Tower at Barangaroo Reserve, in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. The tower was once used by the Sydney Harbour port facilities before they were moved to Port Botany. The former container terminal has been transformed into a foreshore park, with a naturalistic rocky outcrop and landscaped with native trees and shrubs. The tower is being demolished after it was decided that it did not have any heritage value.

Barangaroo Reserve, Harbour Control Tower

The Sydney Ports Harbour Control Tower rises above Barangaroo Reserve, in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. The tower was once used by the Sydney Harbour port facilities before they were moved to Port Botany. The former concrete industrial container terminal was transformed into a foreshore park, with a naturalistic rocky outcrop recreated and landscaped with native trees and shrubs. I posted a photo of the site before redevelopment last week, which can be seen here.

The Sydney Ports Harbour Control Tower is located in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. It was once used by the Sydney Harbour port facilities before they were moved to Port Botany. This photo which shows the exposed sandstone cliff was taken a few years ago. This area has now been extensively redeveloped into Barangaroo Reserve and I'll be showing that soon.

The island has supported naval activities since 1788 and was originally used as a garden bed to grow food for ship crews. The land between Potts Point and Garden Island was reclaimed to expand the site for engineering facilities. It is a major marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia. This precinct features a number of heritage buildings which were built in the 1880s and 1890s.

Kyeemagh, baths

Kyeemagh Baths are located on the shore of Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Kyeemagh. There are a number of these netted swimming enclosures along Lady Robinson Beach including ones at Brighton-Le-Sands, Ramsgate and Sandringham. In the distance are the airport runways at Mascot that jut into the bay and the cranes from Port Botany.

Garden Island, hammerhead crane

This hammerhead crane dominates the skyline at Garden Island naval dockyard, in the eastern suburb of Potts Point. Built in 1951, it is one of only 15 still standing in the world but has not been used since 1996, so will soon be demolished. Garden Island is a major marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia. This view across Woolloomooloo Bay, in Sydney Harbour, is from The Domain.

Barangaroo, ferry

This Rivercat Class ferry is making its way past the former Sydney Ports Harbour Control Tower in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. The ferry was acquired in 1992 and named after Betty Cuthbert, an Australian athlete and Olympic gold medallist. The port facilities moved to Port Botany years ago and this part of the Barangaroo foreshore is currently being redeveloped into parkland. The Sydney Harbour Bridge can be seen in the distance.

Port Botany, Sydney Ports Corporation

 The Sydney Ports Corporation is located in the eastern suburb of Port Botany, on the shore of Botany Bay. The facilities at Port Botany consist of two container terminals with six container vessel berths and a bulk liquids berth complemented by container support businesses, bulk liquid berth storage facilities and private berths at Kurnell.

Pyrmont, Jones Bay Wharf

A view of Jones Bay Wharf, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont, with Barangaroo and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the distance. Jones Bay Wharf consists of Piers 19-21 of Pyrmont Wharves.
