Ashbury, observation tower

This observation tower is located in Peace Park, along Trevenar Street in the inner west suburb of Ashbury. Behind it is the heritage listed Ashfield Reservoir which was built in 1912 and is one of a group of four similar elevated reservoirs in the Sydney Water system. The site was a brick pit and shale quarry from 1910 to 1965. It was used as a rubbish tip until it was filled in and then developed into parkland. In 1986 it was named Peace Park to mark the International Year of Peace.

Tempe, Cooks River

Cockatoo Island, water tower

This water tower from the industrial past of Cockatoo Island still dominates the skyline. The concrete tower is the tallest of three that provided water to the island. For a distant view of how it dominates the skyline of the island, there's a shot here from across the harbour.

Eveleigh, water tower

This heritage listed water tower is located at the north eastern entrance of the Australian Technology Park, in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. The Australian Technology Park utilises the heritage buildings of the old Eveleigh Railway Yards. The water tower consists of a 40,000 gallon, open-topped, riveted wrought iron tank on a metal stand. It was erected in 1926 to supply water for the blacksmith and furnace operator in the Locomotive Workshops.

Voyager Point

Voyager Point is one of the newer suburbs of Sydney, which was established in 1987. The suburb takes its name from the commemorative park which was established here to remember the loss of 82 naval personnel from the destroyer HMAS Voyager which collided with the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne in February 1964. Voyager Point contains many large new homes often cynically referred to as McMansions (left). The water reservoir at nearby Pleasure Point (right) marks a stark contrast on the horizon.

Tempe, Cooks River

This view across the Cooks River to the inner west suburb of Tempe, is from the southern suburb of Wolli Creek. It features industrial and commercial developments with the skyline dominated by a large concrete water tower. The Cooks River can look quite picturesque and it was once a popular resort, with large crowds attracted for swimming and boating on the river, until it became too polluted by industrial estates further upstream. Later, part of the suburb became landfill, colloquially known as 'Tempe Tip' which has now been redeveloped for commercial use with some beautiful parklands near the river.
