Five Dock, war memorial

 

The Five Dock War Memorial stands in Five Dock Park, in the inner west suburb of Five Dock. In the centre of the rotunda is an octagonal shaped plinth with honour roll plaques of the names of those from the area who served in World War 1 and World War 2. It was refurbished in 1987 with the brickwork painted over, as seen in this 2014 photo. The brickwork of this rotunda has now been restored to the original look of the facade.

Five Dock, art

 
This is part of an artwork which appears on the side and back wall of a shop, on the corner of Thompson Lane and Garfield Street, in the inner west suburb of Five Dock. The collage is made up of historic photos of products and people from the butcher, delicatessen, bakery, green grocer and coffee shop in this suburb. Other parts can be seen here and here.

Leichhardt, Marion, light rail stop

 
The Hawthorne Light Rail Stop, is at Marion Street in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt. This stop is on the Central to Dulwich Hill line of the Sydney light rail network. The back wall of the shelter features artwork which depicts heritage buildings in the area.

Chippendale, One Central Park

 
Central Park Mall is bounded by Broadway, Chippendale Way, Central Park Avenue and Carlton Street, in the inner city suburb of Chippendale. This shopping centre on six levels features fashion and lifestyle boutiques, supermarkets, eateries, cinemas and an outdoor spaceOne Central Park are the two apartment buildings which tower above. The vertical gardens were a collaboration between French botanist Patrick Blanc and the architects Ateliers Jean Nouvel. The native Australian plants, flowers and vines stretch over 50 metres high, making it the world's tallest vertical garden.

Bardwell Park, war memorial

 
This war memorial is located at the Returned and Services League (RSL) Club along Hartill-Law Avenue, in the southern suburb of Bardwell Park. The obelisk stands in the middle of a memorial garden, dedicated in 1968 to the memory of departed comrades of World War 1, World War 2, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam. Today is ANZAC Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the World War 1 in 1915.

Millers Point, Munn Reserve

Munn Reserve is located between Argyle Place and High Street, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. It sits on land which was part of a land grant to James Mann, who operated a shipbuilding yard with a floating dry dock in this area. It features sandstone blocks which are relics of demolished buildings.

Centennial Park, Federation Pavilion


The Federation Pavilion is located along the Grand Drive in Centennial Park and commemorates the inauguration of the Federation of Australia at this site on 1 January 1901. This rotunda was designed by Alexander Tzannes and erected in 1988, the Bicentennial year of European Settlement. It was constructed around the 'Commonwealth Stone' and features a glass domed ceiling with a colourful design. An inscription around the pavilion is from a 1901 poem 'Australia' by Bernard O'Dowd that reads: "Mammon or Millennial Eden". The building was renovated and plaques were added to celebrate the Centenary of the Federation of Australia on 1 January 2001.

Wolli Creek, Village Square, sculpture


This sculpture is in the middle of Village Square, accessed from Discovery Point Place and Brodie Sparks Street, in the southern suburb of Wolli Creek. "Weave" was created in 2018 by industrial artist Geoff Farquhar-Still.

The Rocks, Sailor's Home

The former Sailor's Home is located along George Street at The Rocks. The original block was designed by Weaver & Kemp and built in 1864 in the Victorian Italianate architectural style, as cheap, clean accommodation for sailors. The streetfront block seen here was designed by Spain & Cosh and built in 1926 in the Inter-War Free Classical architectural style. A continuous parapet in Classical Revival style links the blocks. It hosted sailors until the 1970s and is now the Billich Gallery and a restaurant. The previous colour scheme of the facade can be seen here.

This former corner shop with residence above is located on the corner of Liverpool Street and Bourke Street, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. The building has been redeveloped with an extension behind the shop and an additional two floors added above for apartments. The shop on the corner is now The Mayflower cafe,

Pyrmont, Harlequin Inn

 

The Harlequin Inn is located on the corner of Ultimo Road and Harris Street, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont. This pub was built in the 1880s and was formerly known as the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel until it was renamed in the 1990s. It is known as a rugby union and sporting pub, which is why there is a giant rugby union ball on the awning.

Dulwich Hill, apartments


This commercial and residential building is located on the corner of Wardell Road and Ewart Street, in the inner west suburb of Dulwich Hill. 'Nea Zoi' was built in 2019 with shops on the ground floor and apartments above. This photo was taken a couple of years ago when Alevri, a Greek cafe and bakery was operating on the corner.

Rockdale, Gujaga Park, sculpture


This sculpture is located in a garden bed in Gujaga Park, along West Botany Street in the southern suburb of Rockdale. The duck is one of five large animal sculptures carved from sandstone.

Sydney Arcade, Lego Megastore

 
The Lego Megastore is at the Pitt Street entrance of Sydney Arcade. The 'Rainbow Gum Tree' built with 183,394 bricks, is a model of a eucalyptus tree with native Australian animals: a cockatoo, koala and kookaburra.

Camperdown, mural (Theme Day: Medicine)
