Rockdale, mural

This is part of an extensive mural along the walls of the walkways and travelators leading from the underground car park to Rockdale Plaza shopping centre, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. The mural was created by Joe Whyte in 2022 and depicts historic moments and landmarks from the local area. It depicts the historic pier around Brighton-Le-Sands Baths which opened in 1928 but have since been demolished. This is related to the pier jumping mural featured last week.

Surry Hills, Strawberry Hills Hotel

The heritage listed Strawberry Hills Hotel is located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Devonshire Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The original hotel was built in 1871 as the Southern Cross Hotel and operated until the 1920s when it underwent major redevelopment in the Inter-War style. In 1954 an application was approved by Sydney City Council to incorporate two adjacent 1880s shops into the hotel. The name change to "Strawberry Hills Hotel" only occurred in more recent years, with the name used as an urban locality taken from the former Strawberry Hills Estate.

Cooks River

A view of the Cooks River from Unwins Bridge which carries Bayview Avenue over the river, linking the inner west suburbs of Tempe and Undercliffe. The apartment buildings in the distance stand in the southern suburb of Wolli Creek.

Haymarket, Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre is located along Campbell Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. It was originally built in 1892 in the Federation Free Classical style for use as the Belmore Markets. In 1916, the building was converted to a hippodrome designed specifically for the Wirth Bros circus. It was converted into the Capitol Theatre in 1928 by John Eberson, a renowned American designer of theatrically themed theatres. In 1981, a conservation order saved it from demolition and it was restored and reconstructed in the 1990s. It is currently hosting another run of the musical Beauty and the Beast.

Wolli Creek, Cahill Park

This football oval is in the middle of Cahill Park, on the corner of Gertrude Street and Levey Street in the southern suburb of Wolli Creek. It was a perfect sunny day for mowing the lawn yesterday with a ride-on mower.

Haymarket, Little Hay Street

This chaotic tangle of neon lights hangs above Little Hay Street at Darling Square, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. "City Lights" was created by Brendan van Hek and is comprised of fragments of neon signs, fused together to create a new artwork which recalls the bright neon lights and vibrancy of nearby Chinatown.

Glebe, shop

 
This shop is located on the corner of Glebe Point Road and Mitchell Street, in the inner city suburb of Glebe. The heritage listed building was originally built in 1858 as the "The Currency Lass Hotel" in the Victorian style but was substantially remodelled around 1925 in art-deco style. It is now home to the Vegan Grocery Store with residential space on the first floor.

Wolli Creek, railway bridge

Barrack Street, art

 

 These art installations on lamp posts were along Barrack Street as temporary public artworks created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to enliven civic spaces. "Giant Badges" was created by Adam Norton and featured a series of slogans. The giant badges have an immediate sense of nostalgia to them, but their bright, pop construction placed in the present city centre created new twisted meanings. They have since been removed and the others can be seen here, here and here.

Barangaroo, sculptures

 

"Mermer Waiskeder: Stories of the Moving Tide" is a public artwork hanging above Exchange Square in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. These sculptures were created by Ghost Net Collective and installed here in 2022 and are majestic eagle rays, each one measuring 2.8 metres in width and 3 metres in length.

A sunset view of a ferry moored at the Barangaroo ferry wharf. The Supercat 4 is a Supercat Class ferry acquired in 2001 that is part of the fleet that operates on the Eastern Suburbs routes.

This view of Aquarium Wharf at Darling Harbour is from Pyrmont Bridge. The building houses three attractions: Wild Life Sydney Zoo, Madame Tussauds Sydney and Sea Life Sydney Aquarium.

Circular Quay, light rail stop

 

The Circular Quay Light Rail Stop is located at the northern end of the Central Business District on Alfred Street, between Pitt Street and Loftus Street, beside Circular Quay railway station. It is the final destination on the CBD and South East Light Rail service and this tram will soon be departing for the eastern suburb of Randwick.

The Charlotte is a First Fleet Class ferry acquired in 1985 and named after one of eleven ships of the First Fleet that sailed to Australia in 1787. The Collaroy is a Freshwater Fleet Class ferry acquired in 1988 and named after the northern Sydney suburb. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are in the distance.

Australian National Maritime Museum, HMAS Vampire, Vivid Sydney Festival

The Australian National Maritime Museum and HMAS Vampire moored on display at Darling Harbour were illuminated with these projections during the Vivid Sydney Festival. "Harbour Life" was created by Artists in Motion and depicts the indigenous Eora people as they fish with a spear and burra (fishing hook), while keeping the ecosystem in balance;the desolation of oceans as colonial settlers arrive and industrial fishing takes hold; and how conservationists are saving our sea life from pollution and stray nets with ocean-based drones and recycling efforts.
