Waverley, reservoir

This heritage listed water reservoir is located along Paul Street, in the eastern suburb of Waverley. Nicknamed "Stonehenge", Waverley Reservoir No.1 was completed in 1887 and was the last of four reservoirs built to augment the Botany Swamps Scheme. The other three reservoirs were Crown Street Reservoir in 1859, Paddington Reservoir in 1864 and Woollahra Reservoir in 1880.

  1. Must have been built during the period when architectural elements were added to many manufacturing and utility sites. Beautiful. - Margy

    1. It's quite impressive compared to some of the bland architecture we have from later eras.

  4. Thanks, Jim. I'm patting myself on the back for identifying this structure from the photo alone. I must be having one of my good days, and so is the reservoir—it doesn't look all that old!

  7. When I saw the thumbnail, a water tank is not what I expected it to be! What an unusual find.

  8. There's four old reservoirs in that park. This particular one is heritage-listed. Yes, they still function as reservoirs to this day. Best access point is bus or car along Bondi Road. (Paul Street is a tucked away side-street and hard to find unless you're a local.) It's also walking distance from Bondi Junction. The park is named Waverley Oval and has weekend sports matches. The reservoirs are situated on a hilltop that is one of the highest elevations in Sydney. Gore Hill is another, and I have been told that there is some high elevations in the upper north shore, although I'm never in that part of Sydney. Waverley Oval attracts small groups of backpackers drinking and partying at night, but there never seems to be any trouble.

  9. Oh cool! I remember stumbling upon that fascinating old structure on my last visit. I climbed the hill and walked all around, wondering what it was. Wish I had know then about the Stonehenge nickname; it would have added to the mystery. :)
There were several WARNING, KEEP OUT signs from Sydney Water. "If you are on the grounds without authority you are trespassing." Fortunately not a soul was around to arrest me. ;)
