Croydon, The Strand

The Strand is a typical suburban street with a shopping strip in the inner west suburb of Croydon. It is part of the Malvern Hill Estate which was subdivided in 1909 and designed as a model suburb with Federation style houses and tree-lined streets. Lined with rows of shops in the Federation style and palm trees in the centre traffic island, this street is now heritage listed in its entirety.

  1. Very interesting street scene! Love the difference between your streets and ours here in Canada.

  3. It could be one of our Gold Rush era towns except everyone is driving on the wrong side of the road ;>)

  4. I love this street -- I'm not much of a shopper at all and I hate strip malls. but this street looks like it would be fun to stroll on -- I'd be more tempted to look in the windows and maybe even buy something than. I'm glad it's heritage listed.

  6. I am confused by the 'roundabout' traffic sign against a one-way street.

  7. Bill, it's not a one way street. There are three lanes in the direction towards the camera and two lanes away from it, on the other side of the traffic island and palm trees. The cars on that side are waiting for pedestrians to cross at the zebra crossing. There's a roundabout at the end of the street in front of the houses.

  8. I am always very interested in town planning at the turn of the century. Those Edwardians certainly know about garden suburbs and model towns. I have created a link to your post,
    many thanks

  16. Looks like a real rock solid block of shops, I love old suburbs like that. As they say they don't build them like that anymore.

  22. Grace, I had no idea that Strand meant beach in Swedsh or German, as Robert has also mentioned. Croydon is actually quite far from the beach. I have a feeling it might have a connection to the famous street in London of the same name somehow but I'm not certain.
