Sydney Harbour Bridge, jet boat

It's New Year's Eve and the focus is on Sydney Harbour again. This Shark Boat is seen here returning towards the Eastern Pontoon wharf at East Circular Quay after a speed sightseeing adventure. This view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is from the steps of the Opera House, a couple of years ago. This was the last year that they were building large structures in the middle of the bridge to project special images during the fireworks displays.

Garden Island, dockyard

Garden Island is the home port for the naval fleet based on the east coast of Australia, located in the eastern suburb of Potts Point. It is a major marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia. The island has supported naval activities since 1788 and was originally used as a garden bed to grow food for ship crews. Land was reclaimed between Potts Point and Garden Island to expand the site for engineering facilities. This view is from Mrs Macquarie's Point, across Woolloomooloo Bay.

Woolloomooloo, Sculpture On the Wharf

Sculpture On the Wharf is an outdoor exhibition at the Finger Wharf and promenade in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. "Tranquility" by Andrew Kasper stands on the wharf, with the Finger Wharf and Woolloomooloo marina as a backdrop. The signs along the edge of the wharf are a regular feature.

Woolloomooloo, Sculpture On the Wharf

Sculpture On the Wharf is an outdoor exhibition at the Finger Wharf and promenade in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. It is being held from 18th November 2016 to 18th March 2017. "Helix" by David Ball stands along the promenade, seen here framing a naval ship at the Garden Island dockyard.

The animated Christmas display windows at the Elizabeth Street store of the David Jones department store. This year, Santa has asked a team of polar bears to prepare the presents and load the sleigh for take-off.

This view is from Cathedral Square, beside Cook and Philip Park. "The Madonna and Child" series features painted images from the renaissance to modern day. Merry Christmas.

Martin Place, LEGO Christmas Sleigh

This LEGO Christmas Sleigh has been installed in Martin Place, outside the General Post Office. for the festive season. It was created by certified professional, Ryan McNaught with over 10,000 LEGO bricks. It has a Sydney summer feel with the two elves playing cricket and the sign pointing to the North Pole on a sandy island with a crab and beach ball.

Rowe Street, art

This photograph has been installed on a wall of the MLC Centre on the corner of Rowe Street and Lees Court. It shows the Lincoln Cafe which operated here during the 1940s and a1950s. Rowe Street is off Pitt Street and originally ran to Castlereagh Street before the MLC Centre was built in the 1970s. Rowe Street was a centre of bohemian life with, cafes, boutique shops and galleries behind the Theatre Royal.

World Square, World Tower

World Tower is a skyscraper located along Liverpool Street at World Square. World Tower was completed in 2004 and is the tallest residential building in Sydney with 75 storeys above ground and 10 storeys below. World Square is a large development covering a complete city block, which features a shopping centre, a hotel, office buildings and residential apartment towers covering a complete city block.

Cronulla, Elouera Beach

Elouera is one of the surf beaches along Bate Bay, in the southern suburb of Cronulla. The surf lifesavers patrol the beach from a tent on the beach between the red and yellow flags, a short distance from the lifesaver's tower and club. The lifesavers use these yellow surfboards and life preservers to rescue swimmers or surfers from the ocean.

Burns Philp Building

The heritage listed Burns Philp Building is located along Bridge Street. It has historical significance for its relationship, and continuous association, from 1901-1997, with the Burns Philp Company, a major Australian maritime company who traded with the Pacific Islands. It was designed by Arthur and George McCredie and built in 1900. The architectural styles are described as Federation, Romanesque/late Victorian, Gothic and Neo-Romanesque with Scottish Baronial gables.

Arncliffe, tunnel mural

Continuing the look at the mural on the wall of a new pedestrian tunnel, under the railway line in the southern suburb of Arncliffe. Students at the nearby Al Zahra College provided drawings centred on the school's vision and purpose, which the artist used to create this mural. These images are quite thought provoking.

Hyde Park Obelisk

The Hyde Park Obelisk is an obelisk located on the western edge of Hyde Park, at the junction of Elizabeth Street and Bathurst Street. This view is from the 14th floor balcony of OTC House, an office building across the road. This monument was unveiled in 1857 by the Lord Mayor, George Thornton and was originally used as a sewerage vent, so was jokingly referred to as Thorton's Scent Bottle. The monument is 22 metres high, including the 6.5 metre high square sandstone base and a filigreed bronze pyramid vent at the top. This obelisk was modelled on Cleopatra's Needle, on the banks of London's Thames River.

Millers Point, Moore's Wharf

Moore’s Wharf is located on Walsh Bay in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. It was established in the 1830s by Henry Moore, the first Australian P&O agent. The sandstone warehouse was built by William Long using convict labour and stone quarried on site. Moore bought the wharf and accompanying building from Long in 1837. The warehouse was originally located further west but in 1978 was moved, stone by stone, to its present location when it became the Operational Headquarters of the Sydney Ports Corporation. The vessels moored at Moore's Wharf are used by Sydney Ports Corporation on Sydney Harbour.

Cockatoo Island, water tower

This water tower from the industrial past of Cockatoo Island still dominates the skyline. The concrete tower is the tallest of three that provided water to the island. For a distant view of how it dominates the skyline of the island, there's a shot here from across the harbour.

Cockatoo Island, main entrance

Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour, located at the junction of the Parramatta River and the Lane Cove River. This is the main entrance from the ferry wharf, which sits alongside the administrative building. The island was originally heavily timbered in red gums which attracted many sulphur-crested cockatoos.  Cockatoo Island has been the site of a prison, reformatory, industrial school and shipyard. The heavy industry ceased in 1992 when the shipyard closed and ten years later it became a major venue for art exhibitions and festivals.

St Peters, railway station

This contemporary building at St Peters dwarfs the heritage buildings on the platform of St Peters railway station, in the inner city suburb of St Peters. The station opened in 1884 as part of the Illawarra railway line to Hurstville and later also served the Bankstown and East Hills. Since the early 1990s only services on the Bankstown line stop here.

Martin Luther Kirche

Martin Luther Kirche is a German Lutheran Church, along Gouburn Street, has historical significance as possibly the oldest Lutheran Church in Sydney, and the only Lutheran church surviving in central Sydney. It was designed by T. Dixon Chater and built in 1883 in the Victorian Romanesque architectural style.

The Gymea Bay Baths on Gymea Bay, part of the Port Hacking estuary, are in the southern suburb of Gymea Bay. The Gymea Bay Swimming Club have been using the heritage-listed baths for over 40 years.

Botanic Gardens, flowers (Theme Day: Transitions)

This floral display has been installed to celebrate the bicentenary of the Royal Botanic Gardens. The gardens were founded by Governor Lachlan Macquarie and opened to public in 1816. The display has been in transition throughout the year with seasonal flowers displayed.

Government House, garden

The fountain in the formal gardens of Government House, surrounded by the Royal Botanic Gardens and looking out towards Sydney Harbour. It was the official residence of 27 New South Wales Governors from 1846 to 1996. The Historic Houses Trust now manages Government House as a museum and a 'working State House' with public guided tours, government, community and cultural events taking place there every week.

The Domain, Barrel Roll

"Barrel Roll" is an art installation by Peter Lundberg created in 2011 and located beside Mrs Macquaries Road at The Domain, just outside the Royal Botanic Gardens. This sculpture was the winner of the major prize at Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney in 2012 and is part of a scheme to display the winners of that competition in the Botanic Gardens or adjoining Domain for ten years before being moved on to other public gardens.
