Kirrawee, mural

This colourful mural is located at the entrance of the railway station, in the southern suburb of Kirrawee.“Tickets Please. Don’t Forget Your Ticket!” was designed and created by Kirrawee Public School students with local artist Philip Aspden. It was part of the RailCorp Mural Project 2010 and unveiled on 9th September 2010.

Jesse Street Gardens, war memorial

This war memorial is located in Jesse Street Gardens, outside the Gateway building at One Macquarie Place at Circular Quay. It commemorates the women who served in World War Two and was unveiled in 1990. The plaque reads: In commemoration of the service of the women of New South Wales who enlisted in Australia’s defence forces during World War II, 1939-1945. It also lists: Australian Army Medical Corps, Australian Army Nursing Service, Australian Women’s Army Service, Voluntary Aid Detachments and Australian Army Medical Women’s Service, Royal Australian Air Force Medical Service, Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service, Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force, Royal Australian Naval Nursing Service, Women’s Australian Naval Service.

Anzac War Memorial, Pool of Reflection

The view across the Pool of Reflection, with its rows of poplars alongside, to the Anzac War Memorial in Hyde Park South. Today is Anzac Day, which commemorates those who have served and died in wars. ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and the date marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Anzac forces during the First World War. This memorial, like many across Australia, will be hosting Anzac Day commemorations today.

Vaucluse, South Head Signal Station

The South Head Signal Station is located along Old South Head Road, in the eastern suburb of Vaucluse. Captain John Hunter established a 'lookout post' with huts and a flagstaff in 1790, which would serve as a landmark for ships arriving at the heads. Later, a nine metre high brick column and a semaphore mast were built near the flagstaff. A sandstone tower was designed by Mortimer Lewis and built in the 1840s to replace the brick column and in the 1890s was raised to the present four storeys. It ceased as a signal station for Sydney Harbour in 1992 but was taken over by Coast Guard Sydney and has operated since as a Search and Rescue Base, monitoring small craft and recreational boaters.

Vaucluse, Macquarie Lighthouse

Macquarie Lighthouse is located at South Head, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, in the eastern suburb of Vaucluse. A flagstaff was erected on this site in 1791. Australia's first and longest operating navigational lighthouse was built here in 1818 at the command of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. The poor quality of the sandstone used, resulted in the rapid deterioration of the original tower. The current lighthouse was designed by James Barnet as a replica of the original but using stronger materials and first exhibited in 1883. The lighthouse was fully automated in 1976 and in 1989 the lighthouse keepers were withdrawn.

Vaucluse, Parsley Bay Suspension Bridge

The Parsley Bay Suspension Bridge is a footbridge over Parsley Bay, in the eastern suburb of Vaucluse. A sunny Autumn day still brings out swimmers to the beach and the bay on Sydney Harbour.

Botanic Gardens, obelisk

The Allan Cunningham Obelisk is located in the middle of a pond in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Allan Cunningham, an explorer and botanist, was a Superintendent of the Botanic Gardens. It is difficult to photograph this monument because it stands in the shadows with a very bright backdrop but I did manage to capture its reflection in the pond.

Botanic Gardens, Herb Garden Pavilion

The Herb Garden Pavilion is the newly built sandstone and slate pavilion at the Royal Botanic Gardens. It was officially opened on 1 December 2011 and stands in the middle of the beautifully manicured Herb Garden.

Botanic Gardens, Gardens in Focus

The winning images from the Gardens in Focus photographic competition in 2010 have been placed on banners and are currently displayed in the Royal Botanic Gardens. This banner is located beside the Main Pond. The competition features photographs that capture the living essence of a botanic garden.

Botanic Gardens, Opera on Sydney Harbour

"Opera on Sydney Harbour" was an event held at Mrs Macquaries Point in the Royal Botanic Gardens between 24 March and 15 April. La Traviata was performed on this purpose-built stage on Farm Cove, with the Sydney skyline in the background. The production featured a full orchestra, magnificent sets, beautiful costumes, dazzling effects, fireworks and a 9-metre chandelier suspended above a shimmering stage. Luckily, the skies remained mostly clear during the three weeks of this spectacular outdoor event.

Centennial Park, Column Garden

The Column Garden at Centennial Park features a variety of flowers, plants and trees. The garden is named for two, nine metre high Corinthian sandstone columns which support the statues "Sunrise" and "Sunset".

Centennial Park, We Won

"We Won", also known as "The Footballer", is a sculpture in Centennial Park. It was sculptured by Tommaso Sani and erected in 1893. The bronze life-sized figure is dressed in an outfit worn by football players of the day with the Neoclassical face of Apollo. The bronze cylindrical pedestal is decorated with high relief panels showing eight scenes of a match in progress, played by cherubs. It stands on a granite plinth atop a series of steps, surrounded by eight seated lions.

Centennial Park, bridge

This is one of the sandstone bridges over the stormwater canal in Centennial Park. This footbridge was built around 1890 and links Frog Hollow with the Column Garden.

Centennial Park, sundial

This sundial is located in the Column Garden in Centennial Park. The bronze sundial on the sandstone plinth features the inscription "Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May". The flower beds in the background feature some colourful Autumn blooms.

Centennial Park, Weather Station

These streaky clouds are above the Weather Station in Centennial Park. The original weather station was constructed here in 1907 to assist European settlers across Australia to understand and predict the weather. It was used to measure the minimum and maximum temperatures until it was decommissioned in 1975 and dismantled. In 2008, it was reconstructed as a permanent interpretation of the old weather station, housing information panels telling the history.

Centennial Park, Wetlands Interpretive Trail

These sculptures stand along a pathway beside Duck Pond in Centennial Park. They are part of the Wetlands Interpretive Trail, an installation that blends signage with sculptures and mosaic artwork. The trail tells the story of water use in the parklands, the environmental issues, the pond restoration program and rehabilitation of ecosystems.

The Rocks, Suez Canal

This sandstone paved laneway in The Rocks is known as Suez Canal. The name is supposedly a pun on "sewers canal", from the 19th century when it was an unsavoury place haunted by prostitutes and larrikins, with water cascading down when it rained. This view is from Harrington Street, as the lane narrows to George Street from the junction at Nurses Walk.

The Rocks, Harrington Street, mural

This is one of four murals that have been painted on the underpass of the Cahill Expressway where it crosses Harrington Street, at The Rocks. "The Lowering of Harrington Street, 1914" has been painted from a historic black and white photo. It shows Harrington Street being excavated to its current level. Following the outbreak of the plague in 1900, the State Government seized control of The Rocks and began to straighten and realign the streets, which had evolved without planning from the convict period.

Barangaroo, Sydney skyline

The colours of sunset reflected in the buildings of the Sydney skyline and Darling Harbour. This view is from the wharves at Pyrmont and shows some of the construction that has begun along the foreshore at Barangaroo.

Darlinghurst, St Johns Anglican Church

St Johns Anglican Church is located along Darlinghurst Road, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. This sandstone church was designed by J.F. Hilly in the Gothic Revival style and built in 1858. The noted architect, Edmund Blacket, designed later additions such as the north and south transepts, spire and chancel. The square tower and pinnacled spire of this heritage listed building still dominates the sky in the suburb.

Cronulla, Elouera Surf Life Saving Club

This Elouera Surf Club is located at Elouera Beach, one of the patrolled beaches, in the southern suburb of Cronulla. Elouera is an Aboriginal word meaning 'fine view' or 'beautiful place'. The surf club at this beach was first established in a tent in 1967 but this club house opened in 2007. It provides great views over Bate Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Cronulla, Oak Park

A lone surfer heading into the Pacific Ocean from the rocks and sand at Oak Park, in the southern suburb of Cronulla. While it might have been a cool but sunny Autumn day, the water temperature is still quite warm so a wetsuit is not yet required.

Sutherland, Woronora Cemetery

Woronora Cemetery and Crematorium is located in the southern suburb of Sutherland. Woronora became a general cemetery in 1895 on land that was formerly a brickworks. This stainless steel sculpture on a granite plinth is a simple armillary sphere. It stands on the side of the road, near a bus stop, in the middle of the cemetery.

Carss Park, mural

This mural has been painted on the wall of a liquor shop beside a newsagent, in the southern suburb of Carss Park. It shows a historic scene from the area, from a century ago. An interesting feature is the bench with the words "Carss Park" on it, which extends out from the wall as a real sandstone bench.

The Rocks, Discovery Museum (Theme Day: Cobblestone)

The Rocks Discovery Museum is located on Kendall Lane, off Argyle Street in The Rocks. The museum is a housed in a restored 1850s warehouse and holds a collection of images and archaeological artefacts found in The Rocks, from pre-European days to the present. The Rocks, which is Sydney's oldest neighbourhood, was named by convicts who made homes there from 1788. The lane features sett paving stones which resemble cobblestones, found in many lanes in this historic area, west of Sydney Cove.
