Woolloomooloo, Forbes Street

These spring flowers have added some colour to the pedestrian mall in Forbes Street, in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. The palm trees create a vanishing point to the Horizon Apartments tower at Darlinghurst.

Darlinghurst, substation

This former electricity substation No.6 with underground public toilets is located at Taylor Square between Oxford Street and the intersection of Forbes and Bourke Street, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. The heritage-listed building was designed by Robert Hargreave Brodrick and built from 1904 to 1907 with Owen Ridge & Sons building the substation and G. D. Getherson the underground public conveniences.

Haymarket, cafe

This former warehouse building is located along Valentine Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. It now houses "A Common Being" which includes the busineses "Outta Coffee" a cafe on the ground floor, "Maillot" a shop which curates street fashion and designer brands from around the world and "Blank Gallery" a dynamic creative art space. This building was previously home to the Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Rocks, Sailor's Home

The former Sailor's Home is located along George Street at The Rocks. The original block was designed by Weaver & Kemp and built in 1864 in the Victorian Italianate architectural style, as cheap, clean accommodation for sailors. The streetfront block seen here was designed by Spain & Cosh and built in 1926 in the Inter-War Free Classical architectural style. A continuous parapet in Classical Revival style links the blocks. It hosted sailors until the 1970s and is now the Billich Gallery and a restaurant. The previous colour scheme of the facade can be seen here.

Willoughby, Exoskeleton Lift

The Exoskeleton Lift is at the former Willoughby Municipal Incinerator, located along Small Street, in the northern suburb of Willoughby. The polished stainless steel sculpture over a lift core was created by Richard Goodwin in 2011. The incinerator was built in 1934 but closed by the 1960s. In 1982 it became a restaurant and then in 1989 it was converted to office space. After it was damaged by fire, conservation works to restore the incinerator building began in 2008 with reuse as a community hall, artist studio and cafe.

The Rocks, shops and gallery

A streaky cloud above shops along George Street at The Rocks. The pair of heritage listed shops and residences above were built in 1883 in the Victorian style. The heritage listed hotel building, later a gallery, was built in 1843 in the Georgian Revival style with Art Nouveau details.

The Rocks, gallery

 This heritage listed building, built in the Georgian Revival style architecture with Art Nouveau details is located along George Street at The Rocks. It was built in 1843 as the 'King's Head Hotel' and was later known as the 'Great Pacific Hotel' before it became the 'P & O Hotel' in 1884. It was used as a tea room in 1910 and a rest centre of the Salvation Army Naval and Military Home for military personnel on leave. The building was refurbished in 1928 and became an Ambulance Station until 1990. After the building was renovated it became the Ken Duncan Gallery, used by the Australian landscape photographer until 2015. The last tenant was a gelato shop which like many businesses permanently closed during the Covid 19 pandemic.

St Peters, mural

 
"How's The Serenity?" is a mural on the side of a renovated warehouse which overlooks Simpson Park, along Lackey Sreet, in the inner west suburb of St Peters. The Art Syndicate is a new wave art collective based in the building, which specialises in street art and media. The mural was designed and hand-painted by street artist Alex Lehours in 2020. The mural features images and quotes from sci-fi movies, anime and the classic Australian movie "The Castle".

Hurstville Museum & Gallery

 Hurstville Museum & Gallery is located along MacMahon Street, in the southern suburb of Hurstville. 'Kenilworth' was built in 1929 by Doctor John Saxon Crakanthorp to be his practice and family home. In 1962, it became the new club house and recreational centre for the St George Rugby Club. In 1983, it was transformed into MacMahon's Manor, a fine dining and theatre restaurant. Later it housed other restaurants including Fanari Restaurant & Bar. The museum and gallery opened in 2004 and is maintained by Georges River Council as the only regional museum and gallery in the St George district.

Auburn, Botanic Gardens, Sunshine and Crows

This sculpture is located at the Peacock Gallery, a public gallery in the grounds of Auburn Botanic Gardens, in the western suburb of Auburn. 'Sunshine and Crows' (Bunnal Wagun Djarralang) was created by Leanne Tobin and Cindy Laws and is appropriately located in front of Auburn Aviary.

The Rocks, Museum of Love (Theme Day: Fool)

The 'Museum of Love' is not actually a museum but an immersive art installation on the corner of George Street and Playfair Street, at The Rocks. The gallery is in the former Union Bond Store, originally built as a warehouse but later used as a bank.

Eveleigh, Carriageworks, art

CarriageWorks is a multi-venue arts centre in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. It is housed in the former Eveleigh railway yards which were built between 1880 and 1889. The Carriageworks sign structure has been used to create a unique neon artwork called "Remember Me" by Indigenous artist Reko Rennie. 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s first landfall at Botany Bay and the HMB Endeavour’s charting of the East Coast of Australia. The artist has responded with a present-day memorial in recognition of the frontier wars, the massacres and the survival of the original sovereigns of this country, the Aboriginal people of Australia. He asks us to consider the personal impact of our past and how history is made today.

Smithfield, gallery

The Hallway Gallery is an art gallery located on The Horsley Drive, in the western suburb of Smithfield. It was built in 1995 and was designed and positioned to compliment the style of the old council building alongside, which is now the Fairfield City Museum. It was built in 1913 as the first council chambers of the Municipality of Smithfield and Fairfield, which was incorporated in 1888.

Paddington, art gallery

This former corner shop is located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Windsor Street, in the inner eastern suburb of Paddington. It became home to a private art gallery in 1979, dealing in 19th and 20th Century Traditional and Modern Art.

Art Gallery of New South Wales, sculpture

This is one of four relief panels which adorns the facade of the Art Gallery of New South Wales along Art Gallery Road at The Domain. The original wing and facade were built between 1896 and 1909. The Trustees decided to beautify it with a series of six bronze relief panels designed to depict the six "distinctive historical art periods" of the Assyrian, Egyptian, Grecian, Roman, Gothic and Renaissance but only the four older of the six intended panels were ever completed. The Assyian period is represented by "Assur Natsir Pal, King of Assyria" created by Gilbert Bayes PRBS in 1906. It depicts Ashurnasirpal II, from 883-859 B.C., with the Queen at the opening of a new building. After the death of Tiglath-Pileser III, Assyria had been reduced to comparative powerlessness, but under him the boundaries of the empire were extended, palaces, temples and other buildings were built, whose elaborate sculptures and rich paintings culminated the first period of Assyrian Art. The name "Giotto" is one of 32 artists lettered in bronze below the entablature.
