Barangaroo, ferry

This Rivercat Class ferry is making its way past the former Sydney Ports Harbour Control Tower in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. The ferry was acquired in 1992 and named after Betty Cuthbert, an Australian athlete and Olympic gold medallist. The port facilities moved to Port Botany years ago and this part of the Barangaroo foreshore is currently being redeveloped into parkland. The Sydney Harbour Bridge can be seen in the distance.

Millers Point, post office

This former Millers Point post office is located on the corner of Kent Street and Argyle Street, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. It was built in 1891 in the Federation Free Classical Style and was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon.

Paddington, Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia

The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia is located along South Dowling Street, in the inner city suburb of Paddington. This heritage listed building, built in 1925 in the Academic Classical architectural style, is also known as The Cathedral of God's Wisdom - St Sophia. It has direct historical links with the political division of the Greek Orthodox Church, which occurred during the 1920s which has since been resolved.

The Rocks, shops and houses

These heritage listed shops and houses are located along Cumberland Street at The Rocks. The buildings are part of the 'Long's Lane Precinct', a cluster of nineteenth and early-twentieth houses, rear yards, and laneways between Gloucester Street and Cumberland Street. The three storey building on the corner was built in 1882 in the Victorian Italianate architectural style, intended as a shop and boarding house. The three storey terrace house was built in 1888 and remained as a residence until 1976. The pair of two sorey terrace houses were built in 1891 and remained tenanted until the 1970s. The buildings were restored in the 1990s with the deliberate retention of the external weathered patina, heightening the experience of the building ages.

Chinatown, Sydney Monorail

The Sydney Monorail is seen here travelling above Harbour Street approaching the Chinatown Monorail Station, at the One Dixon Street shopping centre. This photo was taken on 30 June 2013, the last day of operation after 25 years of service of the monorail which will soon be demolished. The monorail often carried advertisements, including this one for a Sydney breakfast radio show.

The Rocks, pub

The Wine Odyssey Australia building is located on the corner of Argyle Street and Harrington Street at The Rocks. This heritage listed building was originally the British Seaman's Hotel, built in 1886 in the Federation Free Classical Style. It is now a fine food and wine bar.

Darlinghurst, Flower For A Friend

"Flower For A Friend" is a giant yellow sculpture in the courtyard outside the entrance of The O'Brien Centre building, which is part of St Vincent's Hospital. It is located on the corner of Victoria Street and Burton Street, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. It was created in 2010 by Christopher Hodges.

Elizabeth Bay, Arthur McElhane Reserve

This little stone bridge and ornamental pond are found in Arthur McElhane Reserve, in the eastern suburb of Elizabeth Bay. It is located opposite the historic Elizabeth Bay House built in 1838 and was originally part of the estate. On this warm winter's day, the park attracted picnickers and even a sunbaker, in the distance.

The Rocks, hotel

This heritage listed bed and breakfast hotel is located along Cumberland Street at The Rocks. The pair of three-storey terrace houses are an example of the Australian Federation architectural style and were part of a public housing tenement constructed by the Housing Board between 1912 and 1924. They remained tenanted until the 1970s and subsequently occupied by squatters. They were restored in 1995 and now operate as Sydney Harbour Bed and Breakfast accommodation.

The Rocks, terrace houses

These heritage listed terrace houses are located along Cumberland Street at The Rocks. These four terraces, built in 1890 in the Victorian architectural style, are typical examples of terraces built in this area at that time. They continued to be used as residences to the late 1970s but became derelict for a number of years until they were restored in 1996.

The Rocks, Lilyvale Cottage

This heritage listed cottage is located along Cumberland Street at The Rocks. 'Lilyvale Cottage' was built in 1845 in the Colonial Regency architectural style, for innkeeper Michael Farrell. It was originally intended to be a gentlemen's residence but became a tavern and boarding house called the Cumberland Hotel. It had conservation work done in 1987 and restored in 1991 as part of the ANA Hotel development next door.

The Rocks, The Butchery

This heritage listed shop and residence is located on the corner of Cumberland Street and Essex Street in The Rocks. The Butchery is two terrace houses built in the 1880s in the Victorian architectural style. The corner building contains a shop with large display windows on the ground level and a separate residence above with access from the side street. This was a butcher shop for many years but these days is a Japanese restaurant. The house next door is a typical 'tunnel back' terrace house from this era.

La Perouse, Receveur Tomb (Theme Day: Bastille Day, France)

The Receveur Tomb is located in the Botany Bay National Park overlooking Frenchmans Bay, in the eastern suburb of La Perouse. Claude-Francois Joseph Louis (Laurent) Receveur was the junior of the two chaplains on the expedition led by Jean-François de Galaup La Pérouse, which arrived in Botany Bay on January 26th, 1788 on the same day that Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet were moving from Botany Bay to Port Jackson. En route to Australia, eleven members of the expedition were attacked and killed with Receveur, according to Lapérouse, receiving 'a severely bruised eye' which led to his death. The Latin inscription on the grave reads: “Here lies L. Receveur French Priest of Friars Minor, Scientist in the Voyage Around the World under the leadership of de Laperouse, died February 17th, 1788.”

Palm Beach, wharf

This ferry wharf is located on the Pittwater Estuary, in the northern beaches suburb of Palm Beach. Palm Beach Ferries provides regular services to The Basin in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Ettalong on the Central Coast.

Leichhardt, post office

Leichhardt post office is located on the corner of Norton Street and St Johns Road, in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt. This heritage listed building was designed by James Barnet and built in 1888 in the Victorian Academic Classical and Victorian Italianate architectural styles. The building was sold in 1992 and the post office had moved to a nearby shopping centre. Although it returned in 2012 to the side annexe section of the building, the main building has struggled to maintain long term tenants.

Darlinghurst, murals

"We Are Here" is a 15-metre-high, 75-metre-long mural in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. It is on the rear façade of the old Oxford Street Municipal Chambers along Foley Street, between Palmer Street and Crown Street and incorporates the brickwork, doors, ducts, pipes, bars and grilles. This giant artwork which was created by Australian street artists, illustrators and photographers, depicts some of the city’s most significant people and events using paint, collage, drawing, paste-ups, stencils, neon lights and photography.

Surry Hills, Chinese Presbyterian Church

The Chinese Presbyterian Church is located on the corner of Crown Street and Albion Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This church was originally the Fullerton Memorial Presbyterian Church, built in 1905 in the Federation Academic Gothic architectural style. The Chinese Presbyterian Church moved here in 1957 when it outgrew its church in Campbell Street. At this time of year, you have a better view of the church since the trees surrounding it have lost their leaves.

General Post Office (Theme Day: Façade)

The façade of the General Post Office (GPO) building, at Martin Place between George Street and Pitt Street. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1866 to 1891 and was designed by colonial architect James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style. At the centre of the 100-metre Martin Place façade is a white marble statue of Queen Victoria flanked by allegorical figures. Below them, above the main entrance, is the United Kingdom coat of arms sculpted in sandstone.
