Chinatown, Sydney Monorail

The Sydney Monorail is seen here travelling above Harbour Street approaching the Chinatown Monorail Station, at the One Dixon Street shopping centre. This photo was taken on 30 June 2013, the last day of operation after 25 years of service of the monorail which will soon be demolished. The monorail often carried advertisements, including this one for a Sydney breakfast radio show.

  1. They will have to find a new way of advertising now

  2. I liked it a lot when I lived there. Too bad their going to demolish it.

  3. Why are they demolishing this? Are people not using it as much anymore?

    1. The monorail wasn't integrated well with other transport systems so ended up only being used by tourists. It needed some major refurbishment which they couldn't afford and developers are keen to redevelop the depot and part of the rail line as part of a new exhibition building.

  5. I've always liked the idea of a monorail. but not if it isn't integrated. I'm still not happy about the ads plaster over the trains, though I understand the need.

  6. I hope some other form of transportation is replacing the monorail.

    1. A light rail (or tram) is now running from Central railway station past Chinatown to Darling Harbour and beyond, so part of the route is covered.

  9. Interesting photo! It's sad that the monorail had to go... (or maybe you aren't... I don't know the reasons of removing the monorail). But well, nice photo!
