Sylvania, jetty


Seagulls bask in the sunshine on this private jetty on the Georges River, viewed from the beach near Holts Point Place in the southern suburb of Sylvania. A paddleboarder makes his way across the river and in the distance is Captain Cook Bridge, which connects Sans Souci to Taren Point.

This mural of a flamingo and a skull is on the wall of a car park along Croydon Street, in the southern suburb of Cronulla. It was created by street artist George Hambov, also known as Apeseven, who creates a tapestry of animals, skeletal structures and patterns.

Eight Chifley Square

The northern entrance to Allawah railway station from Roberts Lane, in the southern suburb of Allawah. This station opened in 1925 when the Illawarra Line from Central to Sutherland was duplicated. It is serviced by the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line

Allawah Hotel is located on the corner of Railway Parade and Mona Street, in the southern suburb of Allawah. It was built in 1928 by Jack Shaw in the interwar style. This view is from the Allawah railway station concourse.

Allawah, substation


This substation is located along Lily Street, in the southern suburb of Allawah. St George County Council was once the electricity supplier for this area which was set up in 1922. In 1979 the organisation was dissolved and Sydney’s electricity services amalgamated to form the Sydney County Council which eventually became Energy Australia. The substation, adjacent to Allawah Railway Station, was built in the art deco style and retains its heritage signage.

Cronulla, art

This ocean animal mural is on the back wall of a supermarket along Croydon Street, in the southern suburb of Cronulla. It was created by Minna Leunig in 2019 as part of the Walk the Walls Street Art Festival where established and emerging street artists were recruited to paint murals, as part of a large crime prevention program to stop graffiti and vandalism.

The Cornerstone Grace Church is a Presbyterian Church located along Woniora Road, in the southern suburb of Hurstville. These modern church buildings are functional but not as impressive as historic church buildings.

Captain Cook Bridge

The Captain Cook Bridge crosses the Georges River between Sans Souci and Taren Point. It opened in 1965 and was named after explorer Captain James Cook ,who landed at nearby Kurnell on 29 April 1770, when navigating his way around Australia. This view is from Old Taren Point Road, below the southern side of the bridge. A fisherman is fishing from his small boat on the river.

Ramsgate Beach, groyne and baths

This view of Botany Bay is from the southern suburb of Ramsgate Beach. The rock groyne is one of the sea walls along Lady Robinson Beach which have been built to protect the sandy foreshore. Ramsgate Baths is a tidal pool consisting of plastic tubes and a mesh shark net.

Dolls Point, Botany Bay


Looking across Botany Bay towards Towra Point, in the southern suburb of Dolls Point. After a few days of rain, the water in the bay looks more brown than blue. The barnacles at the bottom of this disused boat ramp are visible at low tide.
