Pyrmont, Tied to Tide

"Tied to Tide" is a kinetic artwork on the foreshore of Pyrmont Point Park, in the inner west suburb of Pyrmont. It is located along the boardwalk beside Johnstons Bay and was created by Jennifer Turpin and Michaelie Crawford in 1999. It is described as an ‘aquatic instrument’ involving eight identical arms of recycled hardwood beams and red ladders which are ‘played’ by the winds, tides and waves to independently rise, fall, pivot and rotate.

Dolls Point, Lady Robinsons Beach, Botany Bay

A view of Lady Robinsons Beach and Botany Bay from the southern suburb of Dolls Point. These safety signs have been erected along the foreshore at landmark locations. Separate footpaths and bike tracks have been created beside the road.

Darling Point, ferry wharf, Clark Island

This boat on Sydney Harbour sails between Clark Island and the ferry wharf, in the eastern suburb of Darling Point. There was a variety of boats, yachts, ship and ferries out on the harbour on this day. The wharf, which is located at the end of McKell Park, is serviced by Sydney Ferries which provides a regular service between Circular Quay and Watsons Bay.

Redfern, mural

This mural featuring Aboriginal art runs along the wall of the railway line, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. It is located just north of Redfern railway station, near the block. The two office towers, which have dominated the skyline for decades, are now rivalled by two new apartment blocks.

The Rocks, Bligh Reserve, Captain William Bligh

This bronze statue of Captain William Bligh stands in Barney and Bligh Reserve at The Rocks. It was created by Marc Clark and erected in 1987. William Bligh (1754-1817) was a naval officer and Governor of New South Wales. He is probably best known for the Mutiny on the Bounty, which was a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian aboard the Royal Navy ship HMS Bounty on 28 April 1789 on their expedition to Tahiti. He was the Governor of New South Wales from 1806 to 1808.

Circular Quay, ferry

The water is agitated as this ferry arrives at the wharf at Circular Quay. The Freshwater was acquired in 1982 and was the first of the Freshwater Class ferries which is part of the fleet that operates from Circular Quay to Manly. It was named Freshwater after the northern suburb near Manly.

The Rocks, First Fleet Park

First Fleet Park is located between George Street and Circular Quay at The Rocks. This view towards the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Sydney Harbour Bridge is from the walkway beside the Cahill Expressway, above Circular Quay railway station. The park is near the site of the landing of the First Fleet in 1788, so has a strong historical association with the first European settlement in Australia and the subsequent development of the colony.

Redfern, mural

"Welcome to Redfern" is a mural on a former terrace house at The Block, on the corner of Caroline Street and Hugo Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. It was created in 2013 by Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie along with young local artists, as a tribute to the neighbourhood's Aboriginal history, activism community and culture. The building was painted in large stripes using the colours of the Aboriginal flag and then embellished with paste-ups of local heroes. This terrace will eventually house a living museum of Redfern and The Block, which has played an important role in the life of Aboriginal peoples in Sydney.

Darlington, Cadigal Green, The Old School

Cadigal Green is located along Maze Crescent on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Darlington. The curved benches in this park face The Old School, a heritage listed building that was originally the Darlington Public School. It is now used by the Department of Music and as a theatre workshop. The Cadigal are the group of Aboriginal Australians who originally inhabited this area.

Camperdown, University of Sydney, Wesley College

Wesley College is a residential college on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. The main wing was designed by Byera Hadley and built Edwardian Gothic architectural style and opened in 1917 as a College of the Methodist Church in Australia. The Callaghan Wing was completed in 1922, the Cecil Purser Wing designed by Alan Dwyer in 1943 and Brewster Murray added the Wylie Wing in 1960. Further extensions were added in 1965 when Fowell Mansfield & Maclurcan increased the capacity of the Chapel and in 1969 when the same firm designed the Tutors Wing. It became a College of the Uniting Church in 1977.

Camperdown, University of Sydney, Fisher Library

The Fisher Library is located along Eastern Avenue on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. Thomas Fisher was the library's greatest benefactor with the first Fisher Library built in 1909 in the building now known as MacLaurin Hall. This Fisher Library was designed by Ken Wolley, Edward (Ted) Farmer and Tom E O'Mahoney and built in 1962 in the International Modern architectural style. At ground level the walls are clad with stone, the first floor is glazed and the second floor contains an extensive roof terrace which is formed by a continuation of the external frame.

Darlington, The Old School

The Old School is located along Maze Crescent and is part of the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Darlington. It was originally the Darlington Public School designed by George Allan Mansfield and built in 1878 in the Gothic Revival architectural style. At the end of 1975 the school, which was in a poor state of repair, was transferred to the university. The building was renovated in 1978 for use by the Department of Music and as a theatre workshop. The small granite water fountain or bubbler near the gates is "Erected to the Memory of David and Jessie Edward, pioneer residents of Darlington".

Camperdown, University of Sydney, Main Building

The Main Building is part of the Quadrangle Group of buildings on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. It was designed by Edmund Blacket and James Barnet in the Victorian Academic Gothic architectural style and built c.1854. The main entrance and clock is viewed from the middle of the Quadrangle.

Aurora Place, Touchstones

"Touchstones" is a giant marble sculpture created by Ken Yasuda in 2000. It is located in the forecourt of the Aurora Place office and residential buildings bounded by Phillip Street, Bent Street and Macquarie Street.

Botanic Gardens, Allan Cunningham Obelisk

The Allan Cunningham Obelisk is located in the middle of a pond beside the Botanic Gardens Restaurant in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Allan Cunningham was an explorer, botanist and a Superintendent of the Botanic Gardens. This monument is almost always in the shadows making it difficult to photograph but luckily at this time of year the sun shines straight above, in the middle of the day.

Barrack Street, sculpture

This bronze statue stands in the middle of the Barrack Street mall. It was a gift from the Mayor of Athens to the Mayor of Sydney in 2000, for the Sydney Olympic Games. It is a copy of a 4th century bronze of the Greek Goddess Athena (sculptor unknown). It stands in front of the first head office of the Commonwealth Bank which was built in 1849 in the Classical Revival architectural style. The building was restored in 1982 and now houses the Athenian Greek Restaurant.

Dawes Point, Walsh Bay, warehouses

A view of the former warehouse that links Pier 3 with Pier 4 at Walsh Bay, in the inner city suburb of Dawes Point. These restored buildings house the Sydney Dance Company, the Sydney Theatre Company and The Wharf Theatre. The small cafe on the ground floor has views of Walsh Bay. Through the opening, you can see a quirky artwork on display, in the middle of a roundabout in Hickson Road, called "Still Life With Stone and Car" which was created by artist Jimmie Durham in 2004.

The Galeries, Lane Four, art

"Summer Punch" is a 3D mural temporarily on display along the wall of Lane Four at The Galeries Victoria shopping centre, in the Citigroup Centre. It was created by Jane Gillings and is made from found objects. A permanent mural is featured on the glass above the laneway entrance from Pitt Street.

Cronulla, Elouera Beach, surf rescue (Theme Day: What Would You Miss?)

Elouera is a surf beach on the shore of Bate Bay, in the southern suburb of Cronulla. This surf rescue patrol shade tent on the beach and all terrain vehicle are used by lifesavers to rescue swimmers or surfers from the Pacific Ocean. For this theme day, I chose Sydney's surf beaches for what I would miss most if I had to leave the city from which I usually post forever.
