Thirroul, memorial

The 'Amy Memorial' is located at the end of Bath Street, in the village of Thirroul, north of Wollongong. On 13 February 1898, the brig 'Amy' left Wollongong Harbour loaded with a coal cargo and headed north. The wind blew with cyclonic force and the seas were mountainous, which drove the ship ashore on Thirroul Beach. Despite a large crowd creating a human chain on the beach that day to reach within a few yards of the captain and crew, all were lost, including the captain’s wife and child. The ship quickly broke up and the beach was strewn with wreckage of every kind.

Sutherland, Peace Park, Chuo City Garden

Chuo City Garden is located in Peace Park along Eton Street, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. is a Japanese-style garden, named after the sister city of the Sutherland Shire, which opened in 1993.

Matraville, Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, memorial

This military memorial is located in the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, in the eastern suburb of Matraville. It features verses from the bible and was unveiled on the 29th July 2016 to commemorate the Battle of Pozieres in World War 1.

Wolli Creek, monument

The Nepali Community Monument is located near the Garden of the World in Gough Whitlam Park, in the inner west suburb of Undercliffe. The monument was unveiled in 2022 to commemorate the Nepali community's contributions. The words featured are Generosity, Ethics, Patience, Diligence, Renunciation, Wisdom.

Herald Square, sculpture

This sculpture is part of The Tank Stream Fountain in Herald Square, on the corner of George Street and Alfred Street near Circular Quay. The bronze fountain was created by Stephen Walker and presented to the City of Sydney in 1981 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper in 1831. The inscription reads: 1788: A stream flows into Sydney Cove. The European settlement of Australia begins along its sandstone banks. Soon drought strikes and storage tanks are carved from the stone, hence the name Tank Stream. The seasons pass. 1981: The tank stream fountain recalls mankind’s past dependence on this flowing stream and our links with life around this region.

Centennial Park, Federation Pavilion

The Federation Pavilion is located along the Grand Drive in Centennial Park and commemorates the inauguration of the Federation of Australia at this site on 1 January 1901. This rotunda was designed by Alexander Tzannes and erected in 1988, the Bicentennial year of European Settlement. It was constructed around the 'Commonwealth Stone' and features a glass domed ceiling with a colourful design. An inscription around the pavilion is from a 1901 poem 'Australia' by Bernard O'Dowd that reads: "Mammon or Millennial Eden". The building was renovated and plaques were added to celebrate the Centenary of the Federation of Australia on 1 January 2001.

The Rocks, First Impressions, The Convict

"First Impressions" is a sculpture located in Playfair Street in The Rocks. This sandstone relief was created by Bud Dumas in 1979 as a memorial to the convicts, soldiers and settlers who made up the original settlement at The Rocks. This side of the sculpture features "The Convict". The First Fleet arrived in 1788 with 780 convicts, along with soldiers and settlers. This monument also features "The Settlers" and "The Soldier".

Surry Hills, Ibero - American Plaza

The Ibero - American Plaza is located along Chalmers Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This site was founded in 1989 to commemorate the contribution of Spanish and Portugese speaking people to Australia. It features a series of 11 busts and 2 statues representing significant historical figures and national heroes donated by nations including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Little Bay, The Wishing Bell

'The Wishing Bell' is a monument located along Brodie Avenue at the former Prince Henry Hospital site, in the eastern suburb of Little Bay. It stands opposite the clock tower and heritage listed hospital buildings which are now a museum. The bell on this monument was formerly on the clock tower of the Coast Hospital, established here in 1881 to deal with a growing epidemic of Smallpox in Sydney. To commemorate the centenary of the hospital in 1981, the bell was mounted on a pedestal made of stonework from the lodge which marked the original entrance to the hospital.

Kurnell, Solander Monument

 
The Solander Monument is located in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. Daniel Solander was a Swedish botanist who accompanied Captain James Cook, the English explorer, navigator and cartographer on the first recorded European expedition, to navigate and map the eastern coastline of Australia. The south headland of Botany Bay is called Solander Point and this monument was erected by the Swedish community in 1914. An oil tanker is moored at the long oil refinery wharf in the distance.

Kurnell, Banks Monument

The Banks Monument is located in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. Joseph Banks was a botanist on the expedition of the Endeavour led by James Cook that explored the eastern coast of Australia in 1770 and landed here at Botany Bay. The memorial was unveiled in 1947 and consists of a column and semi-circular seat of polished trachyte, with an oval floor. A bronze head of Sir Joseph Banks decorates the column, with an explanatory plaque.

Tamarama, Marks Park, memorial

The 'Bondi Memorial: Rise' is located in Marks Park, in the eastern suburb of Tamarama. It was designed by artist John Nicholson and installed in 2022 to honour the victims of the gay hate murders and violence in Sydney from the 1970s to 1990s. The stone terraces replicate the exact topography of the rock face strata of the cliffs below Marks Park where a number of gay men were thrown to their deaths. This memorial also serves to raise greater community awareness of the issue of LGBTQ hate crimes, promote the continuing need to pursue the truth and justice, and serve as a reminder of the importance of valuing and celebrating diversity in our community.

Walsh Bay, anchor

 
This anchor is displayed as a memorial on Towns Place Wharf opposite Pier 9 on Walsh Bay at Millers Point. The plaque reads: Build Anchor from HMAS Sydney (IV) Pennant Number FFG03 Hull Number FFG35. Donated by the Department of Defence and placed in the City of Sydney by the NSW Government and Precinct Association to recognise the service of the Officers and Sailors from all the ships with the proud name HMAS Sydney.

Herald Square, sculpture

 

This sculpture is part of The Tank Stream Fountain in Herald Square, on the corner of George Street and Alfred Street near Circular Quay. The bronze fountain was created by Stephen Walker and presented to the City of Sydney in 1981.

The inscription reads: The tank stream fountain and the landscaping of this square were donated to the City of Sydney for the pleasure and enjoyment of citizens and visitors by John Fairfax & Sons limited, proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first publication of The Sydney Herald on April 18, 1831. The right Hon. the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Alderman Douglas W. Sutherland, A.M., accepted the gift on behalf of citizens on April 16, 1981. J.O. Fairfax, Chairman, John Fairfax Limited L.P. Carter, O.B.E., Town Clerk

Tempe, anchor

 
This anchor monument was once located at Tempe Recreation Reserve, in the inner west suburb of Tempe. It stood beside a walkway along the foreshore of the Cooks River. If there was a plaque here explaining its history it had disappeared just like the anchor has now.

Kogarah, St George-Illawarra Walk of Fame

The St George-Illawarra Walk of Fame is located outside Jubilee Stadium along Park Street, in the southern suburb of Kogarah. It commemorates the rugby league players in the NRL football team, the St George Illawarra Dragons.

This memorial to cyclists is located in the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, in the eastern suburb of Matraville. The dedication reads: "In memory to all who went for a ride but never came home".

Centennial Park, Federation Pavilion (Theme Day: Symmetry)

The Federation Pavilion is located along the Grand Drive in Centennial Park and commemorates the inauguration of the Federation of Australia at this site on 1 January 1901. Mays Hill, cemetery

 
Mays Hill Cemetery is located along the Great Western Highway in the western suburb of Mays Hill. This cemetery is made up of two distinct cemeteries appropriated for the Presbyterians and Baptists of the Parramatta area in 1839 and 1849 respectively.
