"Dance of Love" is a 1.6 metre bronze sculpture created by Larissa Smagarinsky in 1987. It is a bit of a risque sculpture for such a public place, on the lawn outside the Exhibition Centre at Darling Harbour.
It does seem risque for such a public setting-does the public object to it on a regular basis? I don't find it objectionable, but I know many would and would put pressure on for it to be removed.
I can't recall there ever being any controversy about it which surprises me a bit. It's location is on a path less travelled which may explain that and why I've only noticed it recently.
Sculptor Larissa Smagarinsky . I searched on google about my sculpture and get to your blog. Please let me know what happened to my sculpture , Is it still located , where it was .?
Hi Larissa. When the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre was demolished, I remember a newspaper article mentioned that this sculpture with others were being removed and relocated. Not sure if it has been relocated elsewhere now that the International Convention has been built.
A bit risque--and even the shadows are seductive!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness..

DeleteNo skinny legs on this maiden. Her head is so twisted back, it looks uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt there was some objection to this by the prudes of the city. Great sculpture
ReplyDeletelots of questions from little ones i would imagine. Nice shot!!!
ReplyDeleteNo subtle suggestions in this sculpture. Just suggestive erotics with little imagination required. Quite confronting in a public place.
ReplyDeleteInteresting but not my favorite piece of art...
