This giant coin sculpture has been installed in Customs Square at Circular Quay to encourage recycling and promote a Container Deposit Scheme. It consists of coloured water bottle to form an image of an Australian ten cent coin. Drink containers are the most littered items in Australia but with a cash for container scheme, a ten cent refund could reduce litter and increase recycling rates to 95%. The sculpture was made by Paper Moose productions, where over 50 per cent of the staff ride their bikes to work, even in winter. The structure is made with Thankyou Water bottles, where sales from each bottle contributes to one month's supply of water to a developing country. It also features LED lighting for a low-energy night-time display.
What an amazing and forward thinking country Australia is. We do have recycling in my town, but I know that not everyone does it. My husband and I recycled when we had to go out of our way to separate our paper, glass and aluminum cans, then drive to town to find the receptacles to deposit them. Now our waste trucks pick up at curbside, but still there are those who can't be bothered. I wonder what it will take for people to care about our world and try to sustain it for generations to come.
ReplyDeleteThats great that your city is able to encourge people to recycle. Cool sculpture.
ReplyDeleteA gorgeous sculpture! I really like that it should encourage people to recycle. We have a good recycling system in Austria and it´s really easy for the people but there are always quite a few who are to lacy or ignorant...
ReplyDeleteWow. What a wonderful role model for the possibilities of recycling. And a stunning piece of public art as a bonus.
ReplyDeleteOhh, I like that Jim. The artist was quite creative to use plastic bottles to create such a textural likeness to our 10 c coin. Very clever.
ReplyDeleteGreat way to use old bottles. Like the bit about riding your bike in winter. Try riding on eover here in winter you would realise your winters are like our summers
ReplyDeleteLovely sculpture and a great shot!
ReplyDeleteArtistic sculpture.

Hi Jim,
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific work of art. (Your coins are much prettier than ours.)
We don't have a refund where I live, but I do recycle my bottles.
Isn’t it fun finding blues to share? Thanks for playing today.
Happy Blue Monday!
It looks great and would be a wonderful if the scheme goes through. All liquor, wine & beer containers are refundable here in Ontario so you never seeing them littering the ground. It would be great if all plastic containers were the same.
ReplyDeleteThat's great, Pat. At the moment we only have one state that has implemented this scheme but hopefully more will follow soon.
DeleteCool.
ReplyDeleteI still don't understand why so many people insist on buying their water in plastic bottles.
