General Post Office, clock tower
The clock tower of the General Post Office (GPO) building, located at 1 Martin Place between George Street and Pitt Street. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1864 to 1891, designed by James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style. In 1999, the GPO building was redeveloped as part of the the Westin Hotel and Macquarie Bank office building behind it.
Probably a great view from that top window.

The General Post Office must have been extremely important. Otherwise the state government wouldn't have put so much effort into fancy architecture and decoration.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly was in those days with the clock tower dominating the skyline in those days and the GPO considered to be the centre of the city, with all road measurements from Sydney made from this point.
