Woolworths, Park Street and George Street

The Woolworths Building is located on the corner of Park Street and George Street. Bebarfalds Ltd was a furniture manufacturer and home furnishings retailer established in Sydney in the 1870s with a store here from 1894. When Park Street was widened, an 8-storey commercial shopfront and warehouse building was designed by Kent and Massie and completed in 1929. Woolworths was invited to open a variety store on the ground floor and after they took over the lease from Bebarfalds in 1965, more floors were added. It transformed into a Woolworths supermarket on the ground and basement levels, a Big W discount department store on level one and warehouse and office space above. The City of Sydney purchased the building in 1985 with plans to demolish it for the Town Hall Square development in 2028.
