The former Hurstville Fire Station is located in MacMahon Street, in the southern suburb of Hurstville. It was built in 1912 in the Federation Free architectural style. It has been restored and is now part of a residential and commercial building.
Thanks for the image and date. It looks like a very interesting and solid piece of architecture, with an added on balcony and sunburst decoration. This was serious architecture... firemen has serious work to do.
I was not familiar with the term Federation Free architecture. Looked it up. This is indeed a handsome former fire station... and I'm glad it was restored... but I'm surprised they were allowed to keep the sign.
This looks like a firehouse straight out of a movie! I love it!

ReplyDeleteI love buildings like that, part of a collective memory of a bygone era.
ReplyDeleteGood to see they are keeping these old buildings, even if they are now overshadowed by those awful blocks of units.
ReplyDeleteThis was a handsome building in its day. Glad to read that they preserved it and put an appealing new building above it.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the did a great job preserving it.
ReplyDeleteI like the sunray things at the top of the sign,
ReplyDeleteToday, I watched the Masterchef Oz, the episode where they cooked in the green restaurant. I remembered your post.
ReplyDeletefirestations here have suffered the same fate. The one nearest my school has become a unihostel.
ReplyDeleteVery nice fire station. I like the sign saying "Fire Station" :D

ReplyDeleteSigns
Fire Stations of that era were definitely made to be attractive!
ReplyDeleteLove the old brick -- no doubt about what it is, is there?
ReplyDeleteit does look like a movie set. i love the red bricks.
ReplyDeleteKim, yes that is a block of apartments behind the fire station.
ReplyDeleteFunny, even without the Fire Station written on it, it has that look of one. That sunburst effect is also neat looking!

ReplyDeleteFrancesca, I think the sign contributes to the heritage value of this building.
ReplyDeleteNice looking fire station. I wonder what they use it for now. The new building looks a resonable distance behind.
ReplyDeleteKevin, the last time I checked, it had been converted to medical consultancy rooms for a number of doctors.
