The Domain, The Offerings of War

The Offerings of War” is a large bronze sculpture which sits outside the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in The Domain. It is paired up with a sculpture on the other side of the main entrance called “The Offerings of Peace”. Both are the work of the English sculptor Gilbert Bayes and completed in 1923.

  1. I hang around the AG of NSW all the time, and hadn't paid much attention to the outside. But now you raise the subject, both the Offerings Of War and Of Peace are pretty damned impressive, as befits a state art gallery. Very nicely located!

  2. I agree that they are impressive, but they have also been given pride of place on either side of the entrance. They represent statuary from another era, yet one that I don't wish to see wiped out in any way. I feel, though, that it is important to combine these two (War & Peace) with the reclining nude of Henry Moore and the matchsticks of Brett Whitely for a view that covers a range of styles.

  3. such a heroic time in art-

  4. Hels and Julie, I think these sculptures are perfectly suited to the exterior of the art gallery but I also appreciate the other modern works of art in suitable locations.

  5. Wow beautiful. Feels a lot of emotion put on that statue. ^_^

  6. I thought the building behind looks familiar... I had some fun times there.

  7. Like Julie, I like all the statuary out the front. My favoutite is the Henry Moore 'Reclining Nude'. I would love to see the bits of sandstone from old buildings on the BG lawn. that looks really interesting.

  8. Interesting reading. Please have a great day.

  9. Very impressive statue Jim, I will have to make sure I see them all when I come over.

  10. I can't imagine a barefoot warrior, but what do I know? :-)
