Birchgrove, Ballast Point Park, sign

This old sign is embedded in the garden near the entrance of Ballast Point Park, in the inner west suburb of Birchgrove. Like parts of the artworks that stand next to it, the sign is an old relic from the former "Caltex" oil refinery that once stood on this site. The artworks seen here are "Tank 101" and "The Tank Farm", featuring parts of old rusty tanks used by the refinery.

  1. Your old sign reminded me of the old symbol used here in the States for Texaco gas. I googled to find Caltex began here in California. Small world. :)
I loved this series of shots as I scrolled down. I find it a very artful way to showcase what was once there.
    Nice work

  9. Kim, Caltex is an Australian company that had refineries and petrol stations in south east Asian. The company merged with Ampol in 1995 and has been part of Chevron since 2001. While the company continues to trade as Caltex in Australia, there may have been changes in other markets.

Carletta and Andy, the company was created from the merger of Socal and Texaco in Australia back in 1936. Both Caltex and Texaco had similar logos for a long time. The Caltex logo has also changed in Australia in recent years.
