This view is from Gas Lane, off Kent Street, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. The heritage sandstone building along Jenkins Street is the former Australian Gaslight Company. The laneway name comes from the former Millers Point Gas Works which once stood along the shore of Darling Harbour which can be seen here stretching to the inner west suburb of Balmain.
A lovely view of the harbor and the sky! Great shot!
ReplyDeleteGood view but dangerous curve for motorist !
ReplyDeletewonderful, I only see this spot in the hustle and bustle of day light hours. Your photo is so peaceful...
ReplyDeleteJim, you really do a fine job of giving the historical perspective of the locations you photograph. Being interested in history, «Louis» appreciates this quality about your blog very much. The historical context you add gives depth to the images you show.
ReplyDeleteThat even looks like a gas light Jim!
ReplyDeleteMark, I was wondering whether the lamps in this lane may have been old gas lamps that have been converted to electricity.

ReplyDeleteNice shot.
ReplyDeleteRegards and best wishes
So much to like about this photo, especially the different light sources--warmth from the street light over the foreground and then that colorful sunrise over the water. You were on Gas Lane at a fortunate time for photos.
ReplyDeleteLovely shot! I can't wait to get back to Sydney now I have my DSLR and the ability to shoot in so many different conditions.
ReplyDeleteI love the reflection of the sunset in the window.
A lovely urban capture. :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous view...such a wonderful place to be in the evening...Great shot!
ReplyDeleteJim, I think gas lighting went into the city about 1840, about when the township was declared the City of Sydney and get municipal government, When the 150th was celebrated, AGL went around 'refurbishing' and reestablishing the ornate gas lamps of that original era. There is one near the Queen Street gates of Centennial Park and quite a few in the Argyle Park down where the tram terminus was directly opposite The Lord Nelson. That could be when these lamps were tarted up. There is probably a sign there somewhere, AGL is not shy!!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo...wish I could feel the warm air over there! :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful view of the harbor and such lovely peaceful skies! Great capture as always and I always enjoy the history and other information about the places your photograph! Hope you have a great weekend, Jim!
