Leichhardt, war memorial

This war memorial is located in Pioneers Memorial Park, in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt. The grey marble obelisk with a sculpture of a lady was created in 1922 as a World War 1 memorial and originally stood at the corner of Marion Street and Norton Street. This site was originally Balmain Cemetery which was used for burials until 1908. It became a public park in 1941 and the graves were moved to other cemeteries. The war memorial was moved to the park in 1949 and also became a monument for soldiers killed in World War 2.
