Redfern, St George Antioch Orthodox

St George Antioch Orthodox Church is located on the corner of Walker Street and Cooper Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. Also known as St George's Cathedral, this redbrick building with a copper dome was built in 1953.

  1. I like how the shadows seem to be huddling in one corner of the front of the church. Are they afraid of holiness? ;)

  2. Love that belfry-and the copper dome. Sadly, a copper dome like that here in the US would be vulnerable to theft as the metal is sold for cash.

  6. Where was the congregation before this church was built in 1953? Was there an older church that was pulled down? It looks as if they ran out of space for all the other facilities that the congregation required.

    1. Yes, Hels. There was another church further down the road that was replaced by a housing commission development.

  7. It is a nice looking cathedral with disparate styling elements, as the style seems to be of the Middle East, the brick makes adds a look of North America and the dome on top makes it true to its Orthodox roots. It is a good looking house of worship...

  9. I like how the shadows seem to cluster to the left in the side street and round the tree on the right as if framing the base of the church. Lovely photo.

  11. i kind of wonder why they went with that green door - would have thought with all those details they would have gone a bit more fancy. love those fences - so decorative. ( :

    1. Maybe they should have chosen a lighter green to match the patina on the copper dome and crucifix.

  13. It's in Redfern. About 3 blocks from Waterloo (Phillip St is the divider) and one block from Cleveland St which is the divider between Redfern and Surry Hills.
