Two Anzac Memorials featuring bronze sculptures of Australian and New Zealand soldiers on plinths, are located at the western approach of the Anzac Bridge at Rozelle. The sculpture of an Australian ANZAC soldier (colloquially known as a digger) facing west was unveiled on ANZAC Day in 2000. This sculpture of a New Zealand ANZAC soldier facing east was added in 2008. Both statues were created by Alan Somerville, with sand collected from Ari Burnu beach in Gallipolli, Turkey placed underneath. Today is ANZAC Day, which marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War in 1915, with the centenary commemorated this year.
A powerful, poignant monument.
