This office block is located at 39 Martin Place, with Sydney Tower in the distance and a glimpse of the MLC Centre. This 22-storey office block built in 1972 has been in the news this week because it is one of the buildings earmarked for demolition to allow underground construction of a new Sydney Metro line.

I hate to see good buildings demolished....and the cost must be horrendous!
ReplyDeleteAlthough, in this case the building does not look that great so I'll be looking forward to the replacement.
DeleteThe pattern of windows and structure has a mesmerizing feel.
ReplyDeleteThe building still looks good but it has to go for the sake of development. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteTrue true. 1972 ugly! However what a waste of resources to pull it down :(
ReplyDeleteSuch a "young" building to be demolished. But I guess progress can't be stopped. - Margy
ReplyDeleteThat building is rather "young" to meet the demolition process isn't it?
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of old buildings In our area which are renovated and "repurposed". But structures built in the latter part of the 20th century were often not all that structurally interesting. The one in your photo, however, does have some interest.

NC Sue, I guess it would have just been renovated like many nearby buildings, had the plans for the underground railway line not coincided.
DeleteSo many windows.
ReplyDeleteI have often passed by it. Didn't realize it's going to be demolished. Wonderful click.
ReplyDeleteA new underground line must be causing an awful lot of disruption in the city once it gets underway.
ReplyDelete“Moving Forward” is sad to me when it come to destroying good buildings. I guess the new underground is necessary, but it is still sad. Your pic sure of the building is interesting the way the dar concrete looks like awnings over the windows.
ReplyDeletegenie, I think it's in the Brutalist architectural style but I'm not 100% sure so I didn't put that in.
DeleteHave to say 70s architecture was not that attractive. Hopefully it will be replaced by a structure with a greater aesthetic appeal.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Hope the new development is worth the demolition of this and other buildings.
