This is a detailed shot of the south eastern corner of the Anzac War Memorial, which stands in Hyde Park South. The building was designed by Bruce Dellit in the Art Deco architectural style and completed in 1934. The sculptures and bas-reliefs that adorn the building were created by Rayner Hoff, who also created the powerful "Sacrifice" sculpture inside. It was built as a memorial to the Australian Imperial Force of World War I and is the focus of commemoration ceremonies.
I love Deco and think it is totally suitable for WW1 war memorials, including your gorgeous view across the Pool of Reflection (some time back). But this is even better because there is nothing quite as Deco as bas-relief sculpture. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is incredible in its detail, and quite dignified.
ReplyDeleteI like this photo very much. The angle has picked out the wonderful sculptures.
ReplyDeleteLove this shot -its architecture with the statues is so unusual! It makes me think of the churches in the Middle ages, that incorporated statues of saints on the outside walls. Again - beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou caught those sculptures just right, Jim!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteI've captured every corner at different times of the day but this was the trickiest since it's shadowed for most of the day/year. A summer morning was the perfect time to shoot it.
Deletevery arresting roofline, enhancing that gorgeous blue sky.
ReplyDeleteAnother gorgeous building and great shot ~ wonderful composition ~
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend to you ~ ^_^
Thank you for posting this beautiful picture. As you now, I am a student of WWI because of my daddy serving in France. This memorial is stunning and it is so nice that your country chooses to truly remember its soldiers of that war. Over here it has fallen on the back burner and it breaks my heart. If those soldiers has not done what they did - the Canadians, the United Kingdom, The USA, and the Australians we would not have what we have today. Your capture is stunning.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful war memorial, glorious blue skies!! A great capture for the day, Jim!! Have a great weekend!!
ReplyDeleteUltimate sacrifices made in times of war deserve such powerful artistic recognition and respect … lest we forget.
