The Balmain Temperance Hall is located on the corner of Montague Street and Llewellyn Street, in the inner west suburb of Balmain. It was built in 1880 when these types of halls were built as part of the Temperance movement in Australia, which promoted the abstinence and moderation of alcohol, as an alternative to pubs and hotels.

The Temperance movement in Australia might have been moralising busybodies, but they did make it their business to offer valuable family activities instead of pubs. I love this Balmain Hall.
