This mural is on the side of a shop along Belmore Road, in the eastern suburb of Randwick. "Proud of our Elders" was originally painted in 1981 and restored in 2012. It acknowledges the Indigenous and immigrant communities who have helped form the character of the area and celebrates elders of the Randwick district. Ollie Simms was the oldest Aboriginal Elder in La Perouse and Auntie to generations of children; Doris Hyde taught hundreds of children to swim and was Gold Medal winner of the Masters Older Age group Olympics; Alice Gundry who founded the Coogee Ladies Pool, Greta Fyson who fed pigeons every day in a park along Coogee Bay Road and Harry Reed ex-jockey and helped build the University of New South Wales.
A meaningful community mural
