This historic post box is located along George Street at The Rocks, outside the Metcalfe Bond Store building. These cylindrical cast iron red painted pillar boxes were produced around 1870 by Triggs and Marr. They feature a finial of a stylised waratah with embossed acanthus leaves on top of the box.

That's great
ReplyDeleteSo what is this for? Do you put letters in it, it seems too small. It's a gorgeous vintage piece.
ReplyDeleteYes, they are used to post letters and are actually about 1.8 metres tall.
DeleteI have seen many red letters boxes in my life time but never with embossed leaves on the top.
ReplyDeleteSturdy.
ReplyDeleteQuite a vintage design
ReplyDeleteA useful government structure well decorated - I like these vintage objects.
ReplyDeleteI love how even ordinary objects were decorated back in the day.
ReplyDeleteMail boxes are so unique in other countries (other than the US where ours are just all the same, blue rectangles). I like how this is set off by the bricks. It casts a nice shadow too!
ReplyDeleteOurs are red and rectangular.
ReplyDeleteWe have some rectangular ones too but these are the older and fancier type.
DeleteA britbox - cool! Thanks for sharing and for taking part in #MySundaySnapshot.
ReplyDeleteI do miss these post boxes... We used to have such a lot in Melbourne, now they are very rare sight... Thanks for taking part in the "My Sunday Best" meme.
