Arncliffe, Princes Highway, footbridge

This view of the Princes Highway is from the southern suburb of Arncliffe, looking south towards Rockdale. The highway was carved out of sandstone and footpaths have been created on either side. The footbridge is located between Arncliffe Public School and St Xaviers Catholic School, allowing students and pedestrians to safely cross over the road. This photo was taken this week in 2025 but you can compare it to the heritage photo from 2007 which I posted last week. Some changes include views of some of the seven high rise apartments built along the highway and other high rise buildings in the distance. The median strip has been removed and lane bollards are now used to change the lane configurations for peak hour traffic. The school has a new shelter and canvas has been installed along the fence for privacy. If you look closely, the sandstone walls are covered in grime and there is now graffiti on the road sign further along.

  1. I like how you capture both the history and the changes in the area. Comparing past and present really shows how the landscape evolves while keeping its character.
