Rookwood, Garden of Remembrance

The New South Wales Garden of Remembrance is part of the Sydney War Cemetery at Rookwood Cemetery. This fountain cascades down with a river of embedded and exposed stones encircircling this steel belvedere. The Garden of Remembrance was constructed in the early 1960s but was completely redeveloped in the late 1980s. The walls in the garden feature memorial plaques to commemorate those who served in wars.

Rookwood, St Michael the Archangel Chapel

St Michael the Archangel Chapel is a Roman Catholic Church in Rookwood Cemetery. This back view of the sandstone building, which was constructed from 1886, showcases the bell tower and the bronze statue of St Michael, the Archangel. This cast statue was installed in 2007 and is the third to adorn this chapel. The original was struck by lightning and destroyed and its replacement also suffered the same fate in 1995. The new statue has been provided with a lightning arrestor to avert another strike.

Rookwood, war memorial

This war memorial is located in Rookwood Memorial Gardens, which is part of Rookwood cemetery. This art deco monument in sandstone and granite has been dedicated to "Those who served Australia and the Empire". It features part of the "Ode of Remembrance": They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

Hyde Park, Archibald Fountain

The Archibald Fountain is a magnificent art deco style fountain located in Hyde Park. The central granite pedestal features a bronze sculpture of Apollo, surrounded by other mythological characters of ancient Greece on three lower pedestals. The fan-like shape of water formed by jets rising behind Apollo, represent the rising sun. The fountain is named after J.F. Archibald, owner and editor of The Bulletin, a newspaper which later became a magazine that encouraged writers to write about Australia. He bequeathed funds to build it to commemorate the association of Australia and France in World War I. It was designed by French artist Francois Sicard and was unveiled on 14 March 1932.

Darlinghurst, mounted police

These mounted police are on patrol in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst, waiting to cross Oxford Street at Taylor Square. The forerunners of Sydney's mounted police force were formed in 1825 making them older than the Canadian Mounties and therefore the oldest continuous mounted police unit in the world. I snapped this on Christmas Eve which explains why the horses look so festive with their red antlers and blue tinsel decorations.

Darlinghurst, Christmas tree

This contemporary, metallic Christmas tree is located at Taylor Square, outside the Darlinghurst court house. The Christmas banners on the light poles have already been replaced with New Year's Eve banners.

St Mary's Cathedral, Lights of Christmas

These images on the facade of St Mary's Cathedral on College Street were part of the annual Lights of Christmas, a light projection show that runs from 8th December to 25th December. These images of the Madonna and Child featured in this show are a series of Renaissance period artworks currently on display at the National Gallery in the nation's capital city, Canberra. These Renaissance works are 15th and 16th century Italian paintings, by masters such as Bellini, Botticelli, Titian and Raphael which are normally on display at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Italy.

St Mary's Cathedral, Lights of Christmas

The facade of St Mary's Cathedralon College Street has been featuring the annual Lights of Christmas, a light projection show running from 8th December to 25th December. This year's theme is Peace.

Surry Hills, Christmas stars

These flashing neon stars are part of a colourful Christmas light display along Crown Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The stars are displayed in the Southern Cross or Crux formation, a constellation that is visible from the southern hemisphere. The Southern Cross is used as a national symbol of Australia and appears on the Australian flag.

Redfern, memorial

This war relic stands close to the entrance of Redfern Park near the corner of Redfern Street and Elizabeth Street. Keeping this World War Two Bofors anti-aircraft gun as a war memorial in this peaceful park has divided the community.

Redfern, Baptist Fountain

The Baptist Fountain is located in the middle of Redfern Park, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. In 1888, Charles O’Neil designed the formal landscape of Redfern Park which included an ornate fountain. It was funded by a prominent local resident and nurseryman, John Baptist, so the fountain was named the Baptist Fountain.

Redfern Park, gates

Redfern Park is located the inner city suburb of Redfern. The Redfern Street Gates were installed in 1891 when the park was dedicated to the people of Redfern. The gates are wrought iron and the piers are sandstone. During conservation work in 2008, the paint was removed from the stonework returning them to their original state.

Circular Quay, wharves and bridge

This view of Circular Quay ferry wharves and a ferry is from the viewing platform above Circular Quay railway station, out across Sydney Harbour to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Narrabeen is a Freshwater Fleet Class ferry acquired in 1984, which is part of the Sydney Ferries fleet that operates services from Circular Quay to Manly.

Australian National Maritime Museum

The Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour, viewed from King Street Wharf. The museum houses exhibitions that explore Australia's links with the sea and how maritime activities and issues have shaped the lives of people in Australia. Some of the outdoor exhibits can be seen from here such as the HMAS Vampire, the Cape Bowling Green Lighthouse and the Endeavour replica.

Carlton, hotel

This heritage building is located along the Princes Highway on the edge of Kogarah Park, in the southern suburb of Carlton. The building was formerly the Kogarah Hotel and now houses a Chinese restaurant. It was originally a single storey building built in 1860 in the with Victorian and Georgian architectural styles. It became a double storey building in 1890 with more Victorian architectural features.

Sydenham, park

Sydenham Green was established as urban parkland in 1999, in the inner west suburb of Sydenham. It was developed in consultation with local residents as a cultural and recreational landscape, with the aim of bringing new life to the suburb. The site became available through acquisition of aircraft noise affected homes. This map located at the entrance of the park, illustrates the former neighbourhood plan.

Sydenham, sculpture

This sandstone memorial sculpture in Sydenham Green, a park in the inner west suburb of Sydenham. It was created by Aboriginal Artist Joe Hirst and dedicated in 1999 to the Stolen Generations. It features images of boomerangs and a couple of small reflective pools. The Stolen Generations is a term used to describe the children of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who were removed from their families by the Australian federal and state government agencies and church missions, under acts of their respective parliaments.

Five Dock, Domremy College

This fence and elaborate gate, an entrance to Domremy College, are located on First Avenue, in the inner west suburb of Five Dock. The Catholic church bought this estate in 1911 and created a private school, administered by the Presentation Order Sisters until 1997. It had developed infants, primary and secondary departments but the the infants and primary departments of the College were phased out. It is now a Catholic girls high school for Years 7 to 12.

Five Dock, Domremy College

The administration building of Domremy College is located on First Avenue in the inner west suburb of Five Dock. It had been a magnificent house built in 1882 in the Victorian Architectural style, called “Delapre” after an old Benedictine Abbey in Northampton, in England. It was renamed "Domremy" when the Catholic church bought it in 1911 and established a private school, administered by the Presentation Order Sisters until 1997.
