Opera House, ferry

 
This Emerald class ferry has passed the Sydney Opera House in the late afternoon and is heading towards the Circular Quay ferry terminal. The ferry was acquired in 2017 and is named for Victor Chang, a pioneering Australian heart surgeon.

Redfern, bollard, art


These are some of the bollards located outside the entrance to Redfern railway station, along Marian Street in the inner city suburb of Redfern. This entrance and the southern concourse opened in 2024. The bollards feature custom artwork by local Aboriginal children of Redfern, designed during community workshops. 
The message reads: Created on Gadigal Country, these artworks showcase the talent and creativity of local Aboriginal children of Redfern. In their designs, the children have reflected on what Redfern means to them, their home, their family and their shared stories and culture. Artworks created December 2023.

Redfern, railway station


This entrance to Redfern railway station is along Marian Street in the inner city suburb of Redfern. The station opened in 1855 on the Illawarra line but this entrance and the southern concourse opened in 2024. The bollards feature custom artwork by local Aboriginal children of Redfern were designed during community workshops.

Balmain, shipyard

 
These ferries and boats are moored at Balmain Shipyard, located at the end of Waterview Street on Mort Bay, in the inner city suburb of Balmain. The dockyards have been a base for ferry operations since the 1860s.

Randwick, car park


A view of the car park at Royal Randwick Racecourse, viewed from Ascot Street in the eastern suburb of Randwick. It's difficult to make a concrete multi-storey car park look good but they have made an attempt to disguise the fencing with these yellow adornments.

Hyde Park, Archibald Fountain

The Archibald Fountain is an art deco style fountain in Hyde Park, near College Street, designed by French artist Francois Sicard and unveiled on 14 March 1932. The fountain is named after J.F. Archibald, owner and editor of The Bulletin, a newspaper which later became a magazine that encouraged writers to write about Australia.

This mural is on the wall of a supermarket in the inner west suburb of Balmain. "Mirrung gawa nuru" is an indigenous artwork which translates to "Belonging to Water Country".

Hyde Park, Archibald Fountain

The Archibald Fountain is an art deco style fountain in Hyde Park, designed by French artist Francois Sicard and unveiled on 14 March 1932. The fountain is named after J.F. Archibald, owner and editor of The Bulletin, a newspaper which later became a magazine that encouraged writers to write about Australia. He bequeathed funds to build it to commemorate the association of Australia and France in World War I. The fountain features mythological characters of ancient Greece. The central pedestal features a bronze sculpture of Apollo with the fan-like shape of water formed by jets rising behind it, representing the rising sun.
Today marks the twenty year anniversary of the first photo I posted on this blog which was also a photo of this fountain and can be seen here. To celebrate, I returned this week for another look at the fountain; this time with St Mary's Cathedral as a backdrop. A view at the ten year anniversay can be seen here.

These private wharves are located along Snails Bay near Propellar Park, in the inner west suburb of Balmain East. The high rise buildings in the distance are in North Sydney. The colourful buildings on the right are the Waterview Wharf Workshops.

Balmain East, Propellar Park


A view of Mort Bay from Propellar Park, in the inner west suburb of Balmain East. The bay was named after industrialist and entrepreneur Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, who established Australia’s first major private dry dock along its foreshore in 1855. The park has large, historic ship propellers displayed along the shore as an acknowledgement of the area's ship building past.

 This heritage listed two storey commercial building is located along Beattie Street, in the inner west suburb of Balmain. It was built in 1910 for iron monger Alex Smith Ltd but is now used as a residence.

These shops and residences above are located on the corner of Wardell Road and Bass Road in the inner west suburb of Earlwood. 'Adora' is a cafe and shop which sells handmade chocolates, confectionary, cakes and gelato.

Dulwich Hill, GreenWay

Some of the amenities and artwork along the GreenWay in the inner west suburb of Dulwich Hill. There is a bike repair station, water bubbles, picnic tables and benches. The GreenWay is a walking and cycling corridor which follows the route of the Inner West light rail and Hawthorne Canal.

Dulwich Hill, sculpture

This sculpture is located along the GreenWay in the inner west suburb of Dulwich Hill. 'Goods Stuff', created by James Voller in 2025, is a series of concrete and tile sculptures which form the train-like shape of an engine with three carriages. The GreenWay is a walking and cycling corridor which follows the route of the Inner West light rail and Hawthorne Canal.

Breakfast Point, workshop

This former workshop is located along Peninsula Drive, in the inner west suburb of Breakfast Point. The heritage listed building was built in 1891 and was used as a Blacksmith's Workshop as part of the Mortlake Gas Works of the Australian Gaslight Company from 1884 to 1998. The building was most recently used as a sales office after the site was redeveloped into houses and high rise apartments.

Lewisham Hotel


The Lewisham Hotel is located along Parramatta Road in the inner west suburb of Lewisham. It was built in 1857 as The Wheelwrights Arms, named to cater to local blacksmiths and livery stables that repaired horse-damaged vehicles. It was the only hotel to survive a strict 19th-century temperance campaign in the suburb and in 1914 officially changed its name to the Lewisham Hotel.
