Surry Hills, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church

The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Surry Hills was the first Greek Orthodox church in Australia, consecrated in 1898. This week is Holy Week leading up to Easter, for Eastern Orthodox denominations. The reason for the variation is complicated and goes back to the 4th century when the Church of Rome decided that the date of Easter would be computed independently of any Jewish calculations to determine the date of Passover, so that Easter is observed on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the day of the vernal equinox. The Eastern Orthodox Churches continue to use a lunisolar cycle to calculate the date of Easter, which is also used to calculate the date of Jewish Passover.

Ramsgate Beach, supermarket, Easter

In an effort to find a photo around Sydney with an Easter theme, I noticed that even though people in Australia make such an effort to decorate everything for Christmas, they barely do anything for Easter. The best I could find is this over the top commercial attempt to convince everyone that the hunt for Easter value is over at Coles supermarket at Ramsgate Beach.

Eveleigh, Easter Bunny

This Easter Bunny was located along Locomotive Street, at South Eveleigh in the inner city of Eveleigh. It is part of a promotion by The Grounds Coffee Factory restaurant which handed out free hot cross buns to celebrate Easter.

Customs Square, Easter, advertisement

This Hot Cross Bun House creation was located in Customs Square as an Easter promotion for Stayz, a holiday accommodation website. The walls of the house are made of hot cross buns, spiced sweet buns made with currants or sultanas and marked with a cross on the top, which are popular Easter treats in Australia. Even the smoke coming out of the chimney, filled the square with an aroma that smelt like freshly baked hot cross buns. The promotional people were dressed as bakers and handed out flyers and hot cross buns.

Randwick, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church is a magnificent looking church, located in the eastern suburb of Randwick.

Today is Easter Monday, the day following Easter Sunday, which is a public holiday in Australia.

Sydney Olympic Park, Chiron

This sculpture is located outside the Sydney Showgrounds Main Arena, on the corner of Grand Parade and Orana Parade, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. It was created by Andy Scott and consists of intricately woven mild steel bars. "Chiron" was a centaur, half-man and half-horse responsible for the teaching of arts and medicine to ancient Greek mythological heroes such as Apollo, Achilles, Jason and Hercules. It evokes the spirit of the Sydney Showground's signature event, the Royal Agricultural Easter Show, through its linkage of man and animal. It also resonates strongly with Sydney Olympic Park's history. It was installed to coincide with the 2004 Royal Easter Show, before the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

A view of one of the Sports Halls from Olympic Boulevarde near the corner of New England Avenue, in the western suburb of Homebush Bay. The complex was built for 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and is used to host events in Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Handball and Futsal or Indoor Soccer. It is also a Sydney Showground venue for the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Marrickville, mosaic

 
This Easter themed mosaic is located on the footpath along Marrickville Road, in the inner west suburb of Marrickville.

Waverley, Mary Immaculate Catholic Church

Mary Immaculate Catholic Church is located in the eastern suburb of Waverley. Today is Easter Sunday, the biggest Christian holy day on the calendar, along with Christmas. The Catholic Church in Australia is the largest single Christian denomination.

Rockdale, St Petka Macedonian Orthodox Church

St Petka Macedonian Orthodox Church is located along Railway Parade, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. I've featured this church today because The Resurrection of Christ Macedonian Orthodox Church, also in this suburb, was destroyed by fire this week after Orthodox Easter celebrations. That congregation was formed when a dispute within the church resulted in a split.

Sydney Showground Stadium is located in the western suburb of Homebush Bay and was used during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. It is now used as the showring for the Royal Agricultural Society during the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show, which began yesterday.

The Main Arena at Sydney Showground at Homebush Bay was another stadium that was used during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. It is now used as the showring for the Royal Agricultural Society during the annual Royal Easter Show.

Moore Park, Royal Hall of Industries

The Royal Hall of Industries is located along Drivar Avenue in the eastern suburb of Moore Park. It was built in 1913 in the Federation architectural style. It was also known as the as the Showbag Pavilion, in the days when it was part of the Royal Agricultural Society's Showground. The Sydney Royal Easter Show is similar to a State Fair and showbags were originally free sample bags from vendors or brand groups. These days it is part of The Entertainment Quarter and hosts special events, fairs and festivals.

This stadium, which was used during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, is now the showring for the Royal Agricultural Society during the annual Royal Easter Show. It's been sixteen years since the Sydney Olympic Games this month.

This sculpture of a platypus on a rock is found in the gardens of McKell Park, in the eastern suburb of Darling Point.

Coogee, The Impressionists' Seat

This view of Coogee Beach is from Dunningham Reserve, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. "The Impressionists' Seat" is a sculpture created by Eileen Slarke in 2005. It depicts famous Australian impressionist artists Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder and Tom Roberts, who painted coastal scenes of Sydney in the late 1800s. Conder’s Coogee Bay and Roberts’s Holiday sketch at Coogee, were painted on the same day of the 1888 Easter weekend from this headland looking over the sweep of the bay. Streeton's Sunny South Coogee Bay (2) was a painting from 1890 of the same iconic view.
