Darling Harbour, FIFA Fan Fest

The Sydney International FIFA Fan Fest has been set up at Darling Harbour for the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Soccer matches are broadcast live on giant screens in Tumbalong Park and Cockle Bay. Because of the time difference, most matches are played late at night or early in the morning, Australia time. Last Saturday night the fans gathered at Darling Harbour to watch Australia play Ghana at midnight. Every time a goal is scored by any team, flames shoot up in the air beside the screens, to add to the celebration and excitement.

  5. JM, I certainly can only imagine the sort of excitement for such a huge victory. Australia has suffered a defeat and draw so far, so no reason to celebrate yet.

  7. These large screens are a good idea - we've had them in Manchester - it's a pity we've not had too much to cheer about though ..

  9. Braver man (or person) than I am, Gunga Din. Way too late (or early) for me, have only watched one match on TV let alone sat out in the cold in the middle of the night. Mind you, it might be different if they won something.

  15. EcoRover, Darling Harbour is named after Lieutenant-General Ralph Darling, who was Governor of our state of New South Wales from 1825 to 1831. I've never heard of Ding Darling before.

  16. Anyone losing sleep over the games. We in New Zealand are rejoicing. The last game was at 2.30am, I didn't stay up to watch.
