Sydney Conservatorium of Music

The Greenway Building of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music built in 1821, was commissioned by Governor Lachlan Macquarie as the stables for the nearby Government House of New South Wales, adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens. It was designed by Francis Greenway and in the Old Colonial Gothick Picturesque style. It became the NSW State Conservatorium of Music in 1916 and is now part of the University of Sydney. This building and a brilliant blue sky are seen here reflected in the glass of a skylight for the underground levels of the school. A side view of the building can be seen here.

Those horses really lived in a castle!
What fun it must be to study music there today.

  4. Fantastic capture, Jim! This one and the reflection really took my breath away! Such blue, blue skies! And that's a pretty fancy place for the horses to have lived! I, too, think it would be a great place to study music -- or anything else for that matter! Have wonderful weekend!

  9. I have 1816 as the date for the stables. It was THE major cause of Commissioner Bigge investigating Macquarie's wasteful spending on what was meant to be a colony to punish offenders. Macquarie's tenure finished in 1821.

  11. Thanks, Julie. The Syd Con website says it was commissioned by Governor Macquarie in 1817 but doesn't say when constructed was completed. I'll update my post.
