Sussex Street, The Sussex Hotel

The Sussex Hotel is a pub on Sussex Street, close to Barangaroo and King Street Wharf. Established in 1875, this pub was popular with wharfies and labourers who worked on the wharves and in the warehouses in this area. The hotel has been known as The New Hunter River Hotel, The Big House Hotel and Moreton's Hotel until it was refurbished in recent years.

  1. Beautiful building. You captured it so well with the sunlight upon it and the highrises towering above!

  2. Lovely old building. I enjoy nothing more than to walk amongst the older architecture, and to find out about them. Most of them seem to have such a fascinating history. Great shot!

  4. The windows are amazing, such a collection of shapes and sizes for one building...

  6. I want to have a glass of wine there and dream of staying in the rooms upstairs. What are they all used for now?

  7. Sallie, according to the website, they have a number of different function rooms and bars on the upper levels now. I've only seen the main bar on the ground floor and beer garden outside, which is very popular in summer.

  11. Wonder if it still has a good beer garden and bistro. Think it was Moretons last time I went there.

  12. An amazing Victorian building with modern, jazzy decor. I am glad the old wharfies didn't have to tippy toe their clod hopper shoes around the gorgeous modern interior :)

  14. Australia looks interesting!

Would love to visit it in the future, but I gotta save up quite a lot first as the ride from the Philippines to Oz is quite expensive!

  18. What a great building! I love the architecture on older buildings, they typically put newer buildings to shame.

  19. Funny story. Back in 1987, I was a copper in Sydney (now retired). The hotel was broken into during the night. We arrived and checked the crooks were gone. I noticed NRL memorabilia on the walls but didn't think anything of it. We found the owner's phone number and rang him to come to the pub and secure it. He said he'd be there in an hour. We waited in the bar, flicked on the telly and watched the kangaroos game in UK. Two hours later none other then Arty Beetson wandered downstairs in his bed trackies. He'd been watching the 'Roos game upstairs and didn't want to leave it to come downstairs. Beers all round. Great character!
