Government House
Government House is located in the grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens. It was the official residence of 27 Governors of New South Wales from 1846 to 1996. Since then, the Historic Houses Trust has managed it as a museum and a 'working State House' with public guided tours, vice-regal receptions and government, community and cultural events taking place there every week. Government House was designed by Edward Blore and built from 1837 to 1847, in the Gothic Revival architectural style.
Very impressive building!
ReplyDeleteI like this beautiful castle , excellent photo !
ReplyDeleteFrom the outside, Government House looks fearsome and fortified. I suppose in the 1830s and 1840s, security was important.
ReplyDeleteIs the inside gorgeous?
Hls, I haven't done the full tour but from what I've seen it certainly is grand.
DeleteWow, what a castle. Lucky governors who got to live there!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing - it feels like it was a castle that was moved from olde Europe directly to Oz. It is stately and strong and a real classic. Perfect for a museum!
ReplyDeleteVery impressive gothic structure.
ReplyDeleteThat's an impressive building!
ReplyDeletelooks like a palace
ReplyDeleteLooks like a wonderful place...
ReplyDeleteGolly - I don't think I have ever seen a picture of Government House in Sydney before Jim. How very grand. Is it also known as "Camelot"?
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit off the beaten track, so I'm not surprised that it's not well known.
DeleteLooks as if all the facade has been cleaned. I'm sure I don't remember this building glowing so beautifully. Lovely photo.
ReplyDeletewow!! now i want to be governor!
ReplyDeleteSo impressive! It looks like a fairytale castle!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a magnificent structure. Very nicely captured.
ReplyDeleteWhat a grand building! The art museum in Hartford is a pastiche of architectural styles, since it is the result of many additions at different times. But, the core building is a castle style, not too different from this.
ReplyDeleteVery English style I must say. sort of thing you would see here
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful building! Great that it is now open for all people ...
