Stanmore, service station

This former service station was located on the corner of Salisbury Road and Percival Road, in the inner west suburb of Stanmore. This photo is a heritage item now since this service station was demolished in 2014 and has now been redeveloped into apartments. It was one of the last petrol stations to still offer driveway service. The palm tree is an iconic feature on the pedestrian island in Percival Road where it meets Salisbury Road.

  1. The palm tree is so beautiful. There is no personal service at a gas station now.

  2. We still have the odd station here with full service, but most of them are self service.

  5. What can I say, progress is not always progress. I am guessing that the apartments don't have near the charm of this structure.

  7. What a tragedy that developers have to be so destructive. Couldn't they have built their flats AND leave the drive way and veranda intact?

    1. It's a shame they didn't do that or save some of the memorabilia for a display somewhere. I'll have to take a shot of the new block of flats, which are almost completed, to show the comparison.

  8. Hi, Jim...such a shame they couldn't keep the station going. Glad you got this awesome photo of it....

  9. That is terrible that they demolished such a beautiful building. With all the space in Australia you would think that planning rules could protect more of your heritage.
