Sydenham, Track Inspection Vehicle

This Track Inspection Vehicle is passing through the railway station in the inner west suburb of Sydenham. MTPV1 is one of two Mechanised Track Patrol (MTP) vehicles used since 2014 which reduce the need for manual track inspections. They use laser-based technologies for track geometry, rail profile, rail corrugations and non-contact overhead wiring measurement.

  1. Sounds like an important vehicle! I've seen pickup trucks with rail wheels along the tracks here. I wonder if the people inside were inspecting. I'm torn as to whether I'd rather trust a mechanized patrol, or people. If it's been used for more than ten years, it must work. Thanks for joining with your shadows!
